DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 22, 2021) – Despite goals from graduate student Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and junior Katie Kreider (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-5, 0-3 NE10) have dropped five games in a row, while the Owls (2-3, 2-1 NE10) move over .500 in NE10 play. The two goals scored by Mercy is a new season high.
Cotton netted her first goal of the season and Kreider picked up her team-leading second goal of the year. Junior Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) had a team-high four shots on goal and senior Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made six saves to take the loss.
Southern Connecticut was led by Brianna Caffrey, Kaitlyn Bourque and Josephine Nolet who all scored. Janelle Ward made 10 saves to earn the win.
Mercy recorded the first three shots on goal with Ward stopping all of them to keep the game scoreless. The Owls opened the scoring in the 14th minute of action when Bourque fired a shot from the right side just inside the circle into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, heading into the second quarter.
Southern Connecticut added onto their lead in the 20th minute when Nolet tapped home a pass from Shaw following a corner to make it 2-0. The score remained 2-0 heading into halftime.
Mercy got within striking distance in the 34th minute when Kreider scored off a shot in front of the goal to make it 2-1. The Mavericks momentum was briefly halted in the 40th minute when Caffrey scored to make it 3-1. Mercy had a chance in the 44th minute but a Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) shot was stopped by Megan Habakangas to keep the Mavericks down by two heading to the fourth quarter.
Viscione made three saves early in the fourth quarter to keep the game at 3-1. Cotton got the Mavericks to within one, 3-2, when she scored in the 52nd minute after beating the goalie 1 v 1 and shooting into an open cage. Mercy could not find the equalizer in the final eight minutes of play and the Owls came away with the win.
Mercy held a 19-11 edge in shots and penalty corners were tied at 9-9.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, September 24th when they play at No. 9 American International at 7 p.m.
