Game Preview: Women's Basketball Plays at Staten Island on Wednesday

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 61-57 win over Molloy on Monday. The Mavericks were led by junior Kellie Nudd and senior Taysha Bender who both had a team-high 19 points. Junior Katie Wall had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists and sophomore Maria Tedesco added seven points and a game-high-tying 10 rebounds. Mercy has started ECC play 4-0 for the first time since 1990-91 and is looking to start 5-0 in ECC play for the first time ever. The Mavericks with a win would be off to their best 13-game start since 2015 when they started 7-6. Mercy with a win would have their most ECC wins in a season since the 2008-09 season when they had seven. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Wall is a one-time ECC Player of the Week and two-time Honor Roll recipient and ranks fourth in the ECC in points per game (15.8), third in assists (4.4) and is fifth in steals per game (2.4). Senior Taysha Bender ranks sixth in the conference in points per game (14.8) with 1.9 made threes per game. Nudd was named to the ECC Honor Roll and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 20th and is averaging 11.6 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in eight games this year. Junior Asha Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd and is posting 6.3 points per game with a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game. Talib is currently ranked 13th in the ECC in rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.8 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year. Mercy is currently third in the ECC in steals per game (7.8). The Mavericks are currently second in the ECC allowing just 59.8 points per game in ECC play.  

Scouting the Dolphins

Staten Island is coming off a 92-88 double-overtime win over Bridgeport on Saturday. The Dolphins were picked 10th in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 17-8 in 2019-20. Staten Island is making their ECC debut this year and is making the transition from Division III to Division II. The Dolphins are led by sophomore Ashley Lambert who averages a team-high 11.4 points per game. Freshman Jenalyse Alarcon is second on the team with 10.9 points per game and leads the team with 9.3 rebounds per game. Alarcon was named ECC Player of the Week on Monday and is a one-time Rookie of the Week. Sophomore Gia Esposito posts 10.3 points per game and one-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Elizabeth Lofaro pours in 10.1 points per game.
