STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Jan. 12, 2022) – Despite 10 different Mavericks scoring, the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 78-53 decision to ECC foe College of Staten Island on Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (1-12, 1-5 ECC) fail to build off their win on Monday, while the Dolphins (4-8, 3-3 ECC) improve to .500 in ECC play.
Junior James Taylor Jr. (South Chesterfield, Va./Neosho County CC) had a team-high-tying nine points for Mercy and junior Elijah Mitchell (Edison, N.J./Monroe College) had a team-high-tying nine points and a team-high six rebounds. Junior Brandon Wilson (Farmingdale, N.J./Covenant College Prep) added eight points and sophomore Jayden Dewaal (Toronto, Ontario/Trinidad State Junior College) netted seven points and five rebounds.
Staten Island was led by Messiah Mallory who had a game-high 32 points and 16 rebounds.
The Dolphins held a 5-4 lead at the 18:46 mark of the first half following a Jay Turner (Waterbury, Conn./Notre Dame West Haven Prep) jumper that got Mercy within one. Staten Island answered with an 11-2 run to take a 16-6 lead with 14:23 left in the opening half.
A Taylor Jr. free throw made it 18-11 in favor of the hosts with 12:53 on the clock. The Dolphins went on a 10-3 run to increase the lead to 14, 28-14, with 8:25 remaining in the half. Staten Island later built the lead to 17, 41-24, at the 1:26 mark and headed into halftime up, 43-27.
Mercy trimmed the Dolphin lead to 14, 45-31, following a Wilson layup with 17:58 remaining. Staten Island came right back and put the lead to 19, 52-33, with 15 minutes to play. Staten Island led the rest of the way by double digits, increasing the lead to a game-high 27 points, 78-51, with 1:20 to play.
Mercy shot 29.9 percent (20-of-67) from the floor, 8.3 percent (1-of-12) from downtown and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the foul line. Staten Island shot 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the field, 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (2-of-3) from the foul line. The Dolphins held a 44-38 edge on the glass.
