Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 67-63 win over Staten Island on Wednesday. The Mavericks overcame a 19-point second-half deficit to earn the win. The deficit was the largest overcome since February 4, 2012 when they overcame a 23-point deficit against New York Tech. The Mavericks were led by junior Katie Wall on Wednesday who had a game-high 23 points and hit the go-ahead three with 24 seconds left. Junior Kellie Nudd had a double-double by way of 19 points and 11 rebounds and senior Taysha Bender had nine points. Mercy has started ECC play 5-0 for the first time ever and is looking to start 6-0 in ECC play for the first time ever. The Mavericks with a win would be off to their best 14-game start since the 1992-93 season when they started 8-6. Mercy is looking to pick up their first win over UDC since February 2, 2019. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Wall is a one-time ECC Player of the Week and two-time Honor Roll recipient and ranks fourth in the ECC in points per game (16.3), third in assists (4.4) and is fifth in steals per game (2.3). Senior Taysha Bender ranks eighth in the conference in points per game (14.3) with 1.8 made threes per game. Nudd was named to the ECC Honor Roll and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 20th and is averaging 12.2 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in nine games this year. Junior Asha Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd and is posting 6.0 points per game with a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game. Talib is currently ranked 13th in the ECC in rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.5 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year. The Mavericks are currently second in the ECC allowing just 60.4 points per game in ECC play.
Scouting the Firebirds
UDC is coming off a 52-45 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas at home on Wednesday. The Firebirds were picked sixth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 8-20 in 2019-20. UDC is led by one-time ECC Player of the Week sophomore Latavia Jackson who is averaging a team-high 15.2 points per game with 8.0 rebounds per game. Two-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Destiny Ryles is posting 11.0 points per game and a team-high 4.1 assists per game. Sophomore Halia Ellis also averages double figures with 10.3 points per game and freshman Ronnasia Blatch-Huggins is putting up 8.4 points per game and a team-high 8.9 rebounds per game.
