Game Preview: Women's Basketball Hosts Queens on Wednesday

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 77-64 win over UDC on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by junior Katie Wall and senior Taysha Bender who combined for 54 points. Sophomore Maria Tedesco had nine points and seven rebounds and junior Kellie Nudd had seven points and a team-high nine rebounds. Mercy has started ECC play 6-0 for the first time ever. With a win over Queens, Mercy would have their most ECC wins in a season since the 2008-09 season when they had seven ECC wins. The Mavericks with a win would be off to their best 15-game start since the 1988-89 season when they started 9-6. Mercy is also looking for their first six-game winning streak since the 2019-20 season. With a win on Wednesday, Mercy would have their most wins in a season since the 2014-15 season when they had nine wins. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Wall is a one-time ECC Player of the Week and two-time Honor Roll recipient and ranks fourth in the ECC in points per game (17.1), third in assists (4.6) and is fifth in steals per game (2.2). She is coming off a career-high 28 points with eight assists in the win over UDC on Saturday. Senior Taysha Bender ranks sixth in the conference in points per game (15.3) with 2.1 made threes per game. Bender had a career-high 26 points in the win over UDC. Nudd was named to the ECC Honor Roll and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 20th and is averaging 11.8 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in nine games this year. Junior Asha Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd and is posting 6.1 points per game with a team-high 7.1 rebounds per game. Talib is currently ranked 12th in the ECC in rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.7 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year.

Scouting the Knights

Queens is coming off an 80-43 loss to Daemen on Sunday after earning their first win of the season at D'Youville on Friday. The Knights were picked fifth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 7-19 in 2019-20. Queens has dropped six of their 10 losses by 10 points or less. The Knights are led by two-time ECC Rookie of the Week Chelsea Reeves who is averaging a team-high 12.7 points per game with 6.8 rebounds per game. Khadija Demry is second on the team averaging 12.3 points per game. Tsahai Corbie is third on the team with 9.7 points per game. One-time ECC Player of the Week Jennah DeGout leads the Knights with 8.9 rebounds per game and Reeves leads the team with 3.0 assists per game.
