Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off an impressive 99-60 win over Queens on Wednesday. The 39-point win was the largest win for Mercy since 2017 and was their largest ECC win since 2001. Mercy has started ECC play 7-0 for the first time ever and currently has their most wins in a season since 2014-15. With a win over D'Youville, Mercy would have their most ECC wins in a season since the 1999-00 season when they had eight ECC wins. The Mavericks with a win would be off to their best 16-game start since the 1987-88 season when they started 10-6. Mercy is also looking for their first seven-game winning streak since the 1984-85 season when they won 11 straight games. With a win on Friday, Mercy would have their most wins in a season since the 2008-09 season when they had 10 wins. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Junior Katie Wall is a two-time ECC Player of the Week, one-time MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention and two-time Honor Roll recipient and ranks third in the ECC in points per game (17.7), second in assists (4.8) and is second in steals per game (2.6). Wall is averaging 25.7 points per game, 6.3 assists per game and 3.3 steals per game over her last three games on 59.6 percent shooting. Senior Taysha Bender ranks sixth in the conference in points per game (15.6) with 2.1 made threes per game. Bender had a career-high 26 points in the win over UDC on Saturday. The senior is averaging 18.3 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game over the last three games. Junior Kellie Nudd was named to the ECC Honor Roll and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 20th and is averaging 11.5 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in nine games this year. Junior Asha Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd and is posting 5.9 points per game with a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game. Talib is currently ranked 13th in the ECC in rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.7 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year.
Scouting the Saints
D'Youville is coming off a 64-44 loss to Molloy on Sunday. The Saints were picked ninth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 2-6 last season. D'Youville has recorded ECC wins over Bridgeport and Staten Island and is led by sophomore Sara Pfeiffer who is second in the ECC with 18.8 points per game. She also averages 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. One-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Anna Jankovic is second on the team with 12.5 points per game and averages a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game. One-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Haleigh Schafer posts 12.4 points per game and freshman Stella Mollica pours in 10.2 points per game. The Saints are second in the ECC in points per game allowed (58.8) and hold opponents to an ECC-best 35.6 percent shooting from the floor.
