Game Preview: Women's Basketball Hosts Daemen in Matchup of ECC Unbeatens on Sunday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 22, 2022) – The Mercy College women's basketball team hosts Daemen College with first place in the ECC on the line on Sunday, January 23rd at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off an impressive 81-54 win over D'Youville on Friday. The Mavericks were led by junior Katie Wall who had a team-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Senior Taysha Bender had 18 points and 10 rebounds and junior Asha Talib netted eight points. Mercy currently has their most wins in a season since 2008-09. With a win over Daemen, Mercy would have their most ECC wins in a season since the 1996-97 season when they had 11 ECC wins. The Mavericks with a win would be off to their best 17-game start since the 1985-86 season when they started 13-4. Mercy is also looking for their first eight-game winning streak since the 1984-85 season when they won 11 straight games. With a win on Sunday, Mercy would have their most wins in a season since the 1996-97 season when they had 13 wins. The Mavericks are also looking for their first win over Daemen since January 9, 2016 and their first home win over the Wildcats since January 6, 2014. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Wall is a two-time ECC Player of the Week, one-time MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention and two-time Honor Roll recipient and ranks third in the ECC in points per game (17.9), second in assists (4.8) and is second in steals per game (2.7). Wall is averaging 24.3 points per game, 6.0 assists per game and 3.5 steals per game over her last four games on 57.4 percent shooting. Bender ranks sixth in the conference in points per game (15.8) with 2.1 made threes per game. Bender had a career-high 26 points in the win over UDC on January 15th. The senior is averaging 18.3 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game over the last four games. Junior Kellie Nudd was named to the ECC Honor Roll and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 20th and is averaging 11.2 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in nine games this year. Junior Asha Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd and is posting 6.1 points per game with a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.5 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year.

Scouting the Wildcats

Daemen is coming off a 64-48 win over St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday to extend their winning streak to six games. The Wildcats were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll after earning their second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and capturing their first regional title last March. Daemen is currently ranked seventh in D2SIDA's latest East Region Poll. The Wildcats have won 15 straight ECC regular season games and are 46-8 in ECC play since the start of the 2018-19 season. Daemen is led by ECC Preseason Player of the Year, three-time ECC Player of the Week and two-time Defensive Player of the Week Katie Titus who is tied for the ECC lead with 19.5 points per game and is fourth in the ECC with 9.1 rebounds per game. Senior Tiara Filbert averages 10.6 points per game and senior Mickayla Ivy posts 8.6 points per game.

Mercy resumes action on Wednesday, January 26th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 6 p.m.
