Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 67-62 win over Bridgeport on December 19th. The Mavericks were led by junior Asha Talib who had a career-high 18 points with 11 rebounds against her former team. Junior Katie Wall had 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and junior Kellie Nudd added 17 points. Mercy has started ECC play 3-0 for the first time since 1992-93 and is looking to start 4-0 in conference play for the first time since 1990-91. Mercy is 2-33 in their last 35 meetings against Molloy and is looking to win at Molloy for the first time since January 27, 2016. With a win the Mavericks would have their most conference wins in a season since 2010-11. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Wall is a one-time ECC Player of the Week and two-time Honor Roll recipient and ranks fourth in the ECC in points per game (16.1), third in assists (4.4) and is fourth in steals per game (2.5). Senior Taysha Bender ranks sixth in the conference in points per game (14.3) with 1.8 made threes per game. Nudd was named to the ECC Honor Roll and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 20th and is averaging 10.9 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in seven games this year. Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd and is posting 6.6 points per game with a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game. Talib is currently ranked 11th in the ECC in rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.7 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year. Mercy is currently third in the ECC in steals per game (7.9).
Scouting the Lions
Molloy is coming off a 64-50 win over Queens on December 15th. The Lions were picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 4-5 last year. Molloy went 22-9 during their last full season in 2019-20 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Lions are led by Gabriella Aspuru and Safiyyah Lee who both average a team-high 14.1 points per game. Maya Thomas posts 9.9 points per game and Trinity Hudson pours in 8.3 points per game. Lee leads the Lions with 9.4 rebounds per game and Hudson is second with 7.3 rebounds per game. Aspuru paces Molloy with 2.9 assists per game and 1.9 blocks per game.
