STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2022) – Powered by a team-high three saves from sophomore Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS), the No. 23 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw with ECC foe College of Staten Island on Saturday afternoon at Dolphins Soccer Park.
The Mavericks (9-2-3, 4-1-2 ECC) earn their second straight tie. The Dolphins (4-9-1, 2-2-1 ECC) earn their first tie of the season.
Elvestad made three saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the season. Senior Vasco Baptista (Alges, Portugal/Escola Secudaria Miraflores) had a game-high three shots on goal and senior Benjamin Van Buren (Anderson, S.C./USC Upstate) had two shots on goal.
Staten Island was led by Daniel Angulo and Brendan Maguire who each had two shots and a shot on goal. Amari Thompson made a game-high seven saves in goal.
The Dolphins recorded the game's first two shots on goal, but Elvestad stopped both to keep the game scoreless. Van Buren and freshman Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen (Bergen, Norway/Tertnes Videregaende Skole) forced Thompson to make a save in the 29th and 30th minutes but the game remained scoreless. Neither team recorded a shot on goal in the final 15 minutes of the first half sending the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.
Baptista recorded his three shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of the second half and Van Buren added another shot on goal in the 62nd minute. Elvestad made his final save of the game in the 64th minute and a Dennis Coticelli shot went off the left post for Staten Island in the 68th minute.
However, neither team would be able to find the back of the net, ending the game in a 0-0 draw.
Mercy held a 14-9 edge in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 18th when they host East Stroudsburg at 3 p.m.
