Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 3-2 loss to Southern New Hampshire on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by graduate student Alyssa Sacco who scored two goals and by graduate student Lauren Viscione who made 13 saves. Junior Ally Schreck and Viscione were named to the NE10 Honor Roll last week. Viscione, junior Rachel Palladino, and sophomore Kasey Volz were named to the NE10 Honor Roll on September 27th. The Mavericks are off to their best start in program history and look to start 5-2 for the first time ever. Mercy is also off to their best NE10 start and looks to start 4-2 in NE10 play for the first time. With a win over St. Thomas Aquinas, the Mavericks would have their most wins in a season since 2018 and most NE10 wins in program history. Mercy is 7-5 all-time against the Spartans but have lost the last three meetings. The Mavericks have been led by Sacco who has a team-high 14 points on a team-high six goals with two assists. Palladino is third on the team with seven points by way of a goal with a team-high five assists. Schreck is fourth on the team with five points on two goals and an assist. Rosenfeld has two goals and junior Rieley Fitzgerald is second on the team with eight points on two goals and four assists. Volz scored the game-winning goal in the win over Molloy on September 20th. Viscione is 4-2 in goal with 51 saves, a .810 save percentage and 2.00 goals-against average. The Mavericks just missed out on qualifying for the NE10 Championship and will look to qualify for the championship for the first time in program history. Mercy enters their third season as members of the NE10 and have won three NE10 games in each of their previous two seasons. The Mavericks were picked 13th in the NE10 Preseason Poll and look to prove the coaches' prediction wrong. Leading the returners for Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola is Schreck who had a team-high 15 points last season on a team-high six goals with three assists. Volz was third on the team with eight points on two goals and a team-high four assists. Sacco also returns after recording seven points on two goals and three assists. Rosenfeld and Fitzgerald both had three assists as well last season. Senior Lily Sherry will also see action after recording a goal last season. Viscione returns in goal after going 3-12 with 135 saves, a .738 save percentage and 3.37 goals-against average. Sophomore Alexandra Giordano also returns in goal after making 10 saves in four appearances.
Scouting the Spartans
St. Thomas Aquinas is coming off a 1-0 win over Saint Anselm on Saturday. The Spartans were picked eighth in the NE10 Preseason Poll after going 8-11 overall and 7-7 in NE10 play last season. STAC qualified for the NE10 Championship last season and fell to Assumption in the Quarterfinals. The Spartans are led by sophomore Nicola Van Vuuren who has a team-high 10 points on a team-high four goals with two assists. Freshman Jasmijn Van Drunen has seven points on three goals and an assist and freshman Kelly Johnson has two goals and an assist. Senior Jessie Hohenstein is 3-4 in goal with 37 saves, a .771 save percentage and 1.50 goals-against average. Sophomore Madeline Schaefer is 1-2 in goal with five saves, a .556 save percentage and 1.33 goals-against average in three starts.
