Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 2-0 win over Le Moyne on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Kayla Camacho and freshman Emma Best who both scored and by freshman Kamy Anaya who made two saves. Earlier this week, freshman Ancksu Dixon was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, Anaya was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week and graduate student Jessica Hoyt was named to the Honor Roll. The Mavericks are looking to start 10-1 for the first time since 2018. Mercy has won nine games in a row after opening their season with a loss. The Mavericks look to start 5-0 in ECC play for the second straight season. The Mavericks have won eight straight meetings against STAC and are 12-3-2 in their last 17 meetings against the Spartans. Mercy is ranked No. 15 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and second in the East Region. Graduate student Nikki Bermudez was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, Dixon was tabbed Rookie of the Week and Cooper was named to the Honor Roll on September 6th. Bermudez has a team-high-tying six goals and is second with 15 points on the season. Junior Kayla Camacho has a team-high 16 points and six goals with four assists. Dixon is tied for second on the team with 15 points on five goals and a team-high five assists. Graduate student Claudia McKail has two goals and two assists and Hoyt has four goals. Juniors Toni Valadez and Skyler Schwenkler and sophomore Isabella Messina also have a goal on the season. Junior Madison Rosa has four assists and graduate student Sydney Cooper has a goal and three assists on the year. Anaya has been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week twice and is 9-1 in goal this season with 31 saves, a .861 save percentage and 0.51 goals-against average. The Mavericks are coming off a season in which they went 12-5-4 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. The Mavericks look to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and make the ECC Championship for the ninth straight season. Mercy earned a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship and made the ECC Championship Final for the first time since 2017. The Mavericks ended the season receiving votes nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and began the 2022 season receiving votes. Leading the returners for 2021 ECC Coach of the Year Danny Leon Jr. is Cooper who was named ECC Defensive Player of the Year, D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches All-Region and First Team All-ECC after playing a team-high 1,902 minutes in 2021. Mercy also returns their top scorer from last year McKail who had a team-high six goals and 14 points. First Team All-ECC and All-Region selection Bermudez also returns after recording 13 points on five goals and three assists. Camacho also returns after posting four goals and two assists and Dominique Bono comes back after scoring four goals. Rosa returns after leading the team in assists in 2021 with six and Marlene Avalos returns after having seven points on two goals and three assists. Tyra Anderson, Hoyt and First Team All-ECC selection Schwenkler also return for the Mavericks.
Scouting the Spartans
STAC is coming off a 1-1 tie against Felician on Wednesday. The Spartans were picked seventh in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 4-11 overall and 2-7 in ECC play last season. STAC has not beaten Mercy since 2007. The Spartans are led by freshman Natalie Oden and junior Ileana Santiago who both have a team-high two goals on the year. Freshman Sarai Rodriguez also has a team-high-tying four points on a goal and two assists. Senior Colleen Stevens is 2-3-2 in goal with 52 saves, a .825 save percentage and 1.61 goals-against average in eight games.
