DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2022) – Powered by a combined four goals and three assists from graduate student Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and junior Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), the Mercy College field hockey team celebrated Senior Day with a 6-4 win over NE10 foe Saint Michael's College on Saturday morning at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Lily Sherry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township), Christy Falisi (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead), Taylor Durkin (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay), Sacco and Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) were recognized for their contributions to the Mercy College field hockey team.
The Mavericks (8-7, 7-6 NE10) set a new school record for wins in a season and end the regular season with a winning record overall and in NE10 play for the first time ever. The Purple Knights (5-12, 5-8 NE10) see their season come to an end.
Schreck had a game-high six points on two goals and four assists and Sacco had two goals and one assist. With her two goals and an assist, Sacco sets a new single-season school record with 10 goals and 26 points. The previous goal record was eight set by both Angela Robbins and Jaclyn Ballin. The previous points record was 22 set by Jaclyn Ballin in 2016. Junior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) added her fifth goal of the season and junior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) netted her third goal of the season. Junior Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) had two assists and now has a team-high seven assists on the year and Sherry added her first assist of the season. Juniors Flynn Kirk (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both added a defensive save and Viscione made five saves to earn the win.
Saint Michael's was led by Bridgie Loughlin who had a team-high two goals with an assist. Riley O'Connor made six saves to take the loss.
The Mavericks once again wasted little time in scoring as Rosenfeld scored, off an assist from Ringstad, after a penalty corner in just the 2nd minute of action to take a 1-0 lead. The Purple Knights tied the score at 1-1 on an Erickson Richard goal with less than a minute left in the quarter. The score remained tied at 1-1 after one quarter.
The score remained 1-1 until the 24th minute when Sacco netted her record-setting goal after an assist from Schreck to give Mercy a 2-1 lead. The Purple Knights answered with a Loughlin goal less than a minute later to make it 2-2. Loughlin netted her second goal of the game with less than a minute left in the quarter to give Saint Michael's a 3-2 lead at halftime.
Mercy evened the score at 3-3 less than a minute into the third quarter when Schreck deflected in a Ringstad shot attempt. The Purple Knights regained the lead with a penalty stroke goal from Addy Fenton in the 41st minute to make it 4-3. The Mavericks once again answered with a goal to tie the game again at 4-4. Schreck netted her second goal of the game off an assist from Sherry to tie the score heading into the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks took the lead for good in the 49th minute when Sacco scored her second goal of the game, off an assist from Schreck, following a penalty corner to give Mercy a 5-4 lead. Palladino capped off the scoring with a goal with less than a minute left after a Sacco assist to give the Mavericks a 6-4 victory on Senior Day.
Mercy held a 16-15 edge in shots and a 12-11 edge in shots on goal. Penalty corners were tied at 10-10.
