WORCESTER, Mass. (Nov. 27, 2022) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 64-49 decision to regionally-ranked Assumption University on Sunday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (3-3) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Greyhounds (6-0) remain undefeated on the year.
Senior Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had a team-high-tying 11 points with a game-high five steals to go along with a team-high four assists. Senior Kellie Nudd (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) also scored a team-high-tying 11 points and had a game-high-tying nine rebounds. Junior Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) netted 10 points and a game-high-tying nine rebounds. Freshman Angelina Barrera (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) contributed eight points and sophomore Jaclyn Stanavich (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) recorded five points.
Assumption was led by Molly Stokes who had a game-high 16 points.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the 7:04 mark of the first quarter. A Nudd three at the 1:36 mark of the first quarter cut Assumption's lead to just one, 14-13. A pair of Ja'Lyn Armstrong free throws gave the hosts a 16-13 lead after one quarter.
Another Nudd trifecta at the 9:06 mark of the second quarter cut the Assumption lead to two, 18-16. The Greyhounds scored the next five points to take a 23-16 lead before a pair of Stanavich free throws made it 23-18 with 7:24 left in the half. A Nudd free throw with 4:49 on the clock trimmed the Assumption lead to six, 29-23. The Greyhounds followed with four straight points to increase the lead to double digits and headed into halftime with a 35-25 lead.
Assumption began the third quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 41-25 lead with 7:47 left in the third quarter. A Wall jumper ended the run and cut the Greyhounds lead to 14, 41-27. The Greyhounds ensued with a 6-0 spurt to build the lead to 20, 47-27, with five minutes remaining in the frame. Assumption would head into the fourth quarter with a 52-32 lead.
The Greyhounds started the fourth quarter on a 7-1 run to take their largest lead of the game, 59-33, with 7:34 remaining. Mercy continued to battle and would end the game on a 16-5 run, capped off by a Tedesco layup, to make it 64-49 with 1:13 on the clock. However, the deficit proved too much to overcome and Assumption came away with the win.
Mercy shot 28.3 percent (17-of-60) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from downtown and 80.0 percent (12-of-15) from the foul line. Assumption shot 55.1 percent (27-of-49) from the field, 40.0 percent (2-of-5) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the charity stripe. Assumption held a 34-32 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, November 30th when they play at Staten Island at 5:30 p.m.
