Game Preview: Women's Basketball Plays at St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 67-61 loss to Bridgeport on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by junior Katie Wall who had a game-high 16 points. Senior Taysha Bender netted 14 points and a game-high six assists and juniors Kellie Nudd and Asha Talib each recorded nine points. Mercy currently has their most wins in a season since the 2008-09 season. With a win over St. Thomas Aquinas, Mercy would have their most ECC wins in a season since the 1996-97 season when they had 11 ECC wins. With a win on Wednesday, Mercy would have their most wins in a season since the 1996-97 season when they had 13 wins. The Mavericks are also looking to sweep the season series with St. Thomas Aquinas for the first time since the 1975-76 season. The Mavericks are looking for their first win at STAC since 1985. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Wall is a two-time ECC Player of the Week, one-time MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention and two-time Honor Roll recipient and ranks third in the ECC in points per game (17.1), second in assists (4.4) and is first in steals per game (2.8). Wall has scored 20 or more points in four of her last seven games. Bender was named to the ECC Honor Roll last Monday and ranks seventh in the conference in points per game (15.1) with 2.1 made threes per game. Bender had a career-high 26 points in the win over UDC on January 15th. The senior has scored in double figures in five of her last six games. Junior Kellie Nudd was named to the ECC Honor Roll and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 20th and is averaging 10.4 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in nine games this year. Junior Asha Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd and is posting 6.4 points per game with a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 6.3 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year.

Scouting the Spartans

STAC is coming off a 62-54 win over Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday that snapped a two-game losing streak. The Spartans were picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 5-9 last season. STAC is led by senior Alexa Huertas who is averaging a team-high 10.9 points and 2.4 threes per game. Two-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Sarah Ericson is second on the team with 9.8 points per game and leads the team with 5.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. Senior Victoria Kurisko is posting 9.1 points per game and senior Chanel Brodeur-Muir, freshman Erin Leary and sophomore Angelique Holguin are all averaging 6.5 points per game.
