Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 65-56 loss to Molloy on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by junior Asha Talib who had a team-high 13 points with seven rebounds. Junior Kellie Nudd added 12 points and junior Katie Wall netted 11 points. Mercy has secured their first ECC Tournament berth without every team making it since 2009. Mercy currently has their most wins in a season since the 2008-09 season. With a win over D'Youville, Mercy would have their most ECC wins in a season since the 1996-97 season when they had 11 ECC wins. With a win on Friday, Mercy would have their most wins in a season since the 1996-97 season when they had 13 wins. The Mavericks are looking to win at D'Youville for the first time. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Wall is a two-time ECC Player of the Week, one-time MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention and two-time Honor Roll recipient and ranks fourth in the ECC in points per game (16.1), second in assists (4.5) and is second in steals per game (2.5). Wall has scored 20 or more points in eight games this season. Senior Taysha Bender was named to the ECC Honor Roll on January 24th and ranks sixth in the conference in points per game (15.2) with 2.0 made threes per game. Bender had a career-high 26 points in the win over UDC on January 15th. The senior has scored in double figures in eight of her last nine games. Nudd was named to the ECC Honor Roll and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 20th and is averaging 10.9 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in 12 games this year. Junior Asha Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd and is posting 6.5 points per game with 6.2 rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 5.9 points per game and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year.
Scouting the Saints
D'Youville earned a 61-52 win over Bridgeport in their last game on Sunday. The Saints were picked ninth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 2-6 last season. D'Youville has recorded ECC wins over Bridgeport (two wins), Staten Island, UDC and Roberts Wesleyan and is led by sophomore Sara Pfeiffer who is second in the ECC with 17.4 points per game. She also averages 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. One-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Anna Jankovic is second on the team with 10.6 points per game and averages a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game. One-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Haleigh Schafer posts 8.6 points per game and freshman Stella Mollica pours in 8.9 points per game with a team-high 3.4 assists per game. Two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week junior Riley Riedel is fifth on the team averaging 6.5 points per game.
