Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 63-51 loss at D'Youville on Friday. The Mavericks were led by junior Asha Talib who had a game-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Senior Taysha Bender had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Mercy has secured their first ECC Tournament berth without every team making it since 2009. Mercy currently has their most wins in a season since the 2008-09 season. With a win over Daemen, Mercy would have their most ECC wins in a season since the 1996-97 season when they had 11 ECC wins. With a win on Sunday, Mercy would have their most wins in a season since the 1996-97 season when they had 13 wins. The Mavericks are looking for their first win at Daemen since January 9, 2016, which is also the last time Mercy beat the Wildcats. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 1-8 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2009 last season. Junior Katie Wall is a two-time ECC Player of the Week, one-time MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention and two-time Honor Roll recipient and ranks fourth in the ECC in points per game (15.7), third in assists (4.4) and is second in steals per game (2.5). Wall has scored 20 or more points in eight games this season. Senior Taysha Bender was named to the ECC Honor Roll on January 24th and ranks sixth in the conference in points per game (15.0) with 2.1 made threes per game. Bender had a career-high 26 points in the win over UDC on January 15th. The senior has scored in double figures in nine of her last 10 games. Junior Kellie Nudd was named to the ECC Honor Roll and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 20th and is averaging 10.5 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double figures in 12 games this year. Talib was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on November 22nd and is posting 7.0 points per game with 6.0 rebounds per game. Sophomore Maria Tedesco is averaging 5.7 points per game and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in three games this year.
Scouting the Wildcats
Daemen is coming off a 61-53 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, which was their first ECC loss and snapped a 13-game winning streak. The Wildcats were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll after earning their second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and capturing their first regional title last March. Daemen is currently ranked eighth in D2SIDA's latest East Region Poll and were ranked eighth in the first NCAA East Regional Rankings. Daemen is led by ECC Preseason Player of the Year, five-time ECC Player of the Week and three-time Defensive Player of the Week Katie Titus who leads the ECC with 19.7 points per game and is ninth in the ECC with 8.3 rebounds per game. Senior Tiara Filbert averages 11.8 points per game and a team-high 4.2 assists per game and senior Mickayla Ivy posts 8.7 points per game.
