DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2022) – Powered by a career-high 10 points from senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College), the No. 3/5 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a convincing 21-5 win over Georgian Court University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the fourth straight season and improve to 7-0 all-time against the Lions (0-2).
Kearnan had four goals, six assists and four ground balls. Graduate student Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had four goals and one assist and graduate student Matt Eccles (Syracuse, N.Y./University at Albany) had three goals. Sophomore Andrew Calabria (Sachem, N.Y./Sachem North) had two goals and one assist, freshman Ian Votta (Levittown, N.Y./NJIT) recorded his first two collegiate goals and junior Matt Gaughan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had two goals. Sophomore Brody Caskenette (Owen Sound, Ontario/Owen Sound District Secondary School) added a goal and two assists and graduate student Sean Makar (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Binghamton University) had two goals. Junior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) ended the day with a goal and an assist and junior Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham), sophomore Justin DeMonte (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and freshman Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) each added an assist. Sophomore Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) went 9-of-12 on face-offs with five ground balls and junior PJ Argiros (Levittown, N.Y./Nassau CC) went 6-of-12 on face-offs. Junior Justin Gerdvil (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had a game-high-tying five ground balls and sophomore Tyler Pjatak (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), senior Jake Fitzgerald (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and sophomore Gabriel DeRoché (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) each had two caused turnovers. Senior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) played the first 30:52 in goal and made two saves to earn the win. Senior Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) played the next 14:08 with six saves and freshman Brett Crecco (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) played 4:11 with two saves. Sophomore Giovanni Guido (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) played 6:26 in goal with one save and sophomore Tyler Vassell (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) played the final 4:23 in goal.
Georgian Court was led by Tallen Smith who had a team-high two goals. Andrew Candino played the first 30 minutes in goal and made seven saves to take the loss.
Mercy wasted little in scoring as Eccles netted the Mavericks first goal just 31 seconds in to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Kearnan later made it 2-0 at the 11:10 mark of the opening quarter with his first of the day. Makar followed with his first of the day, off an assist from Kearnan, to put the Mavericks ahead 3-0 less than five minutes in. Kearnan and Scorcia netted back-to-back goals to put Mercy up 5-0 with 7:34 left in the first quarter, leading to a Georgian Court timeout.
The Lions scored their first goal of the game at the 5:52 mark after James Sanford scored to make it 5-1. Caskenette quickly answered with a goal from Guglielmo to put the Mavericks up 6-1. Eccles capped off the scoring in the opening quarter to give Mercy a commanding 7-1 lead after the first quarter.
Kearnan, Eccles and Heyder opened the scoring in the second quarter to give Mercy a 10-1 lead with 10:22 left before halftime. The Lions scored the next two goals to make it 10-3 with eight minutes on the clock. Mercy ended the half with five straight goals to take a 15-3 lead at halftime. Makar got the run started and Scorcia and Calabria both scored twice to give Mercy a big lead at halftime.
The Mavericks continued to dominate in the third quarter, scoring the first five goals of the period to take a 20-3 lead with 8:39 left in the quarter. Scorcia, Kearnan and Gaughan got the rally started and Votta capped off the run with his first two goals as a Maverick. Georgian Court scored the final goal in the quarter to head into the fourth quarter down, 20-4.
Gaughan scored the lone Mercy goal in the fourth quarter and the Mavericks cruised to the win, allowing just one Georgian Court goal in the frame.
Mercy held a 47-32 edge in shots, a 44-23 edge in ground balls and went 16-of-30 on face-offs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, February 26th when they play at Wilmington at 3 p.m.
