DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – For the 11th year, Mercy University Athletics will recap the year by counting down the Top 10 most memorable moments of the 2025-26 season, with all 10 sports represented.
Mercy University Athletics will release a Top 10 moment, as chosen by the athletics staff, with a recap every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the next three weeks culminating with the top moment from the 2025-26 athletic year being unveiled on Monday, August 3rd.
No. 7 – Men's Lacrosse Qualifies for ECC Championship for 11th Straight Season and Ends Season Receiving Votes Nationally
Coming in at No. 7 in our 2025-26 Top 10 Moments is men's lacrosse who qualified for the ECC Championship for the 11th straight season and ended the season receiving votes nationally.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks were picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 10-4 in 2025, advancing to the ECC Championship Final. Mercy was ranked No. 12 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Poll, No. 16 in the USILA Preseason Poll and junior Jake Norton was named USILA and Inside Lacrosse Preseason Third Team All-American.
Mercy began their 2026 season on February 14th at RV Assumption. The Mavericks trailed the Greyhounds, 12-10, with 8:16 left in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Cole Hunsberger scored off an assist from freshman Jackson Wilkinson to make it 12-11 and Norton scored the game-tying goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation, tying the game at 12-12 after a sophomore Nicholas Filocamo caused turnover. The quarter concluded with a save by junior Cameron Dorfman sending the game into overtime. Senior Jack Agres scored the game-winning goal with 2:33 left in the overtime period, assisted by Hunsberger, giving Mercy the 13-12 overtime win. Senior Matthew Magyar led the Mavericks with a game-high and career-high six goals, Filocamo added a game-high four caused turnovers and Dorfman made 13 saves. Mercy won their eighth straight season opener and improved to 3-0 all-time against Assumption. Following the win, Magyar and Dorfman were named ECC Offensive Player and Goalie of the Week.
The Mavericks resumed action on February 18th when they hosted RV Georgian Court in their home opener. Hunsberger and Magyar combined for nine goals and 11 points as Mercy earned a 16-6 win over the Lions. The Mavericks moved to 2-0 on the year, won their 14th straight home opener and started 2-0 for the eighth straight season. Mercy also improved to 11-0 all-time against Georgian Court.
MacSpadyen and the Mavericks moved to 3-0 on the year when they earned a 9-8 win at RV Wilmington on February 21st. Dorfman made a career-high-tying 18 saves and Magyar scored the game-winning goal with 1:48 left in regulation. Dorfman recorded his 300th career save, becoming the fifth Maverick in program history to reach the mark. Senior Sean Higgins had a career-high five caused turnovers and sophomore Michael Mitrano went 11-of-17 on faceoffs with six ground balls and a goal. Mercy started 3-0 for the first time since 2024. Following the 3-0 start, the Mavericks were ranked No. 10 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and No. 14 in the USILA Poll. Dorfman and Hunsberger were named to the ECC Honor Roll and Higgins was tabbed to the USILA D2 Team of the Week.
The Mavericks played at No. 15 Bentley on February 28th, dropping a hard-fought 9-8 decision to the Falcons. Seven different Mavericks scored in the game and Dorfman made a game-high 12 saves. Senior Daniel Fitzgerald added a game-high four caused turnovers. After the week was over, Fitzgerald and Hunsberger were named to the ECC Honor Roll and Fitzgerald was named to the USILA D2 Team of the Week.
Mercy bounced back on March 7th with a 20-2 win over Caldwell. 17 different Mavericks recorded a point, and 14 Mavericks had a caused turnover as Mercy moved to 4-1 on the year. Hunsberger had a game-high six points on a goal and five assists, Magyar had a game-high five goals, junior Justin Ortiz had three assists and Agres, senior Connor Abrahall and freshman Dean Kott each added two goals. Mitrano went 11-of-13 on faceoffs with seven ground balls and senior Peter Murphy made eight saves with three caused turnovers in 30 minutes of action. Magyar and Murphy were named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 9th.
MacSpadyen and the Mavericks opened ECC play on March 14th with a narrow 13-12 loss at Frostburg State. Agres and Kott both had a game-high-tying three goals as Mercy dropped their ECC opener. Murphy made six saves in the final 39:24, recording his 100th career save. Mitrano also went 18-of-27 on faceoffs with seven ground balls. Mitrano and Kott were named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 16th.
The Mavericks hosted No. 4 Saint Anselm on March 18th, dropping a 14-7 decision to the Hawks, despite a team-high three points from Hunsberger. Mercy got back into the win column with a 22-5 win over District of Columbia on March 22nd. 16 different Mavericks recorded a point as Mercy moved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in ECC play, defeating the Firebirds for the 10th straight time. Hunsberger had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists and freshman Sheamus Alazraki and Abrahall both had three goals. Freshman Dillon Halloran went 11-of-13 on faceoffs with seven ground balls and junior Zack Ouassil went 11-of-14 on faceoffs with three ground balls. Following the win, Higgins and Hunsberger were named to the ECC Honor Roll.
On March 23rd, Mercy was ranked No. 13 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and received votes nationally in the USILA Poll. The Mavericks played at two-time defending National Champion No. 1 Adelphi on March 25th. Mercy held a 6-5 lead late in the third quarter with junior Christopher Bergersen scoring to give the Mavericks the lead. Adelphi tied the score at the end of the quarter, sending the teams into the fourth quarter tied at 6-6. The Panthers scored the first goal of the fourth quarter before graduate student Aidan Babnik scored to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:58 left. Adelphi scored the next two goals to take a 9-7 lead and held on for the 11-8 win. Hunsberger had a game-high-tying four points on two goals and two assists and senior Devon Duchnowski had two goals and an assist. Senior Michael Corbo had two caused turnovers and three ground balls and Filocamo had a game-high three caused turnovers. Dorfman added 13 saves. Duchnowski, Dorfman, Hunsberger, Filocamo and sophomore Liam Neimeth were named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 30th.
MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resumed ECC play on April 4th with a 10-7 win at Roberts Wesleyan. Bergersen and Hunsberger both had a game-high three goals as Mercy moved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in ECC play. Mercy improved to 17-0 all-time against the Redhawks. Bergersen, Dorfman, Hunsberger, sophomore Trey Weinstein, Mitrano and Kott were named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 6th.
Agres had a game-high-tying four goals, but the Mavericks dropped a 17-11 decision at reigning ECC Champion No. 14 Molloy on April 11th. Hunsberger had a game-high-tying five points on three goals and two assists and Filocamo had a game-high four caused turnovers. Agres, Duchnowski, Filocamo, and Hunsberger were named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 13th.
Mercy picked up their seventh win of the season on April 18th with a 22-5 win over St. Thomas Aquinas at Mercy Field. 17 different Mavericks had a point, and Murphy made a game-high and career-high-tying 12 saves as Mercy defeated the Spartans for the 10th straight time. Agres had a game-high-tying six points on three goals and three assists and Hunsberger also had six points on two goals and four assists. Murphy and Wilkinson were named ECC Goalie and Rookie of the Week on April 20th and Agres, Hunsberger, Weinstein and Mitrano were tabbed to the Honor Roll.
The Mavericks won their second straight game with a 17-8 win over Bridgeport on April 22nd. Hunsberger had a game-high five goals and four assists, Dorfman made a game-high 15 saves and Corbo had a game-high three caused turnovers as Mercy moved to 8-5 on the year. Halloran went 15-of-23 on faceoffs and sophomore Gavin Lamere recorded a game-high and career-high nine ground balls.
Mercy was ranked ninth in the second NCAA North Regional Rankings released on April 22nd, heading into their regular season finale against D'Youville on April 25th. The Mavericks hosted the Saints for Senior Day, honoring Murphy, Higgins, Duchnowski, Corbo, Fitzgerald, Babnik, Bergersen, Joe Sorok, Ryken Kutner, Agres, Abrahall and Magyar in a ceremony prior to the game. 11 different Mavericks recorded a point and Mitrano went 18-of-20 on faceoffs as Mercy earned a 15-8 win. Agres had a game-high and career-high seven points on four goals and three assists and Bergersen had three assists. Mitrano added a game-high nine ground balls. Mercy ended the regular season 9-5 overall and 4-2 in ECC play, securing their 11th straight ECC Championship berth. Hunsberger was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week on April 27th, Norton was named Defensive Player of the Week and Dorfman earned Goalie of the Week honors. Agres, Mitrano and Halloran earned Honor Roll recognition. Hunsberger was also named to the USILA D2 Team of the Week.
Mercy earned the No. 2 seed in the ECC Championship and would host No. 3 seed Frostburg State in a Semifinal matchup on April 29th. The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-1 lead with goals from Bergersen, Agres and Duchnowski. A late Bobcat goal made it 3-2 at the end of the opening quarter. Kott and Duchnowski scored in the second quarter, giving Mercy a 5-3 lead at halftime. Hunsberger gave the Mavericks a 6-3 lead with 12:37 left in the third quarter before back-to-back goals from Frostburg State made it 6-5. Magyar later made it 7-5 and Mercy headed to the fourth quarter with a 7-6 lead. The Bobcats tied the game at 7-7 midway through the fourth quarter before Duchnowski gave Mercy an 8-7 lead with 3:44 left in regulation. Frostburg State tied the game at 8-8 with less than 10 seconds left in regulation, sending the game to overtime. A Tyrin Long goal with just one second remaining in the overtime period, gave the Bobcats the 9-8 win, ending Mercy's season at 9-6. Duchnowski had a game-high-tying three goals and Hunsberger had three points, including his 100th career point. Corbo had a team-high three caused turnovers, Norton had nine ground balls and Dorfman made a game-high 14 saves. Dorfman recorded his 400th career save.
Following the season, Hunsberger, Filocamo, Neimeth and Bergersen were named First Team All-ECC and Duchnowski, Magyar, Dorfman, and Weinstein were tabbed Second Team All-ECC. Bergersen was also named USILA Third Team All-Region and Hunsberger, Filocamo and Neimeth earned All-Region Honorable Mention.
The Mavericks ended the season receiving votes nationally in the final USILA Poll after going 9-6 on the year, qualifying for the ECC Championship for the 11th straight season.
Mercy also excelled in the classroom with Hunsberger being named the ECC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Men's Lacrosse and Agres, Corbo, Magyar, Norton, Hunsberger, and Neimeth were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) At-Large Academic All-District Team. Men's Lacrosse also had a department-high 34 student-athletes named to the ECC Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Mavericks took home the USILA Academic Team Award for posting a 3.413 cumulative GPA during the 2025-26 academic year. Magyar also was named a USILA Scholar All-American for his accomplishments in the classroom and on the field.
MacSpadyen and the Mavericks will look to continue their success in the 2027 season with a strong core returning and a deep incoming recruiting class.
