GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Mar. 14, 2022) – Despite a team-high two hits on the day from freshman Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law), the Mercy College softball team dropped 6-0 and 8-0 decisions to Adelphi University on Monday afternoon at Janet Ficke Field.
The Mavericks (2-10) have dropped three games in a row, while the Panthers (6-6) improve to .500 on the year.
Game 1: Adelphi 6, Mercy 0
Adelphi took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after an Alexa Sacripante two-run single. The Panthers added three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Courtney Wengryn delivered an RBI single in the inning to give Adelphi a five-run lead.
Mercy threatened in the top of the sixth after freshman Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) and Lula singled. Junior Sydney Johnston (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) then reached on an error to load the bases. A strikeout and groundout ended the inning without the Mavericks scoring a run.
The Panthers tacked on a run in the sixth inning on three hits to build a 6-0 lead. Mercy went down in order in the top of the seventh, giving Adelphi the game-one win.
Lula went 2-for-3, Seppala went 1-for-2 and sophomore Alexandra Karavias (Westbury, N.Y./WT Clarke) went 1-for-3. Junior Alexi Benson (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) pitched four innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Adelphi was led by Sacripante who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Claire Fon pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts to earn the win.
Mercy had four hits and two errors and Adelphi had nine hits and one error.
Game 2: Adelphi 8, Mercy 0
Adelphi scored six runs in the bottom of the first on six hits and one Mercy error to take a 6-0 lead after one inning. Senior Ylannah Bowman (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) was the lone Maverick to reach base in the second inning on a hit by pitch.
The Panthers scored two more runs in the third inning on a Wengryn two-run single to take an 8-0 lead. Mercy would not score and Adelphi came away with the win after five innings via the run-rule.
Mercy was held hitless in the five innings by Panthers starter Lindsey Hibbs who allowed just the one baserunner and struck out 11 batters to earn the win.
Karavias pitched 2.1 innings with six earned runs allowed to take the loss. Senior Sabrina Gonzalez (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Wellington) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Adelphi was led by Wengryn who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Mercy had zero hits and one error and Adelphi had eight hits and zero errors.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 18th when they play at Barry at 4 p.m.
