Giblin Delivers Walk-Off RBI Single as Baseball Earns 5-4 Win Over Dominican

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2022) – Powered by a walk-off RBI single from junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 5-4 walk-off win over Dominican College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (6-13) have won three of their last four games, while the Chargers (3-15) have dropped 12 of their last 13 games.

Giblin went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run and junior Ryan Gonzalez (Howell, N.J./Neumann University) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Nikko Liguori (Branford, Conn./Franklin Pierce University) went 2-for-5 with two runs and freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 1-for-4 with a run. Junior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 1-for-4 and graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC) and freshman Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) both went 1-for-3. Senior Ivan Martinez Jr. (Bronx, N.Y./Towson University) went 1-for-1 and junior Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) pitched six innings with one run allowed to take a no-decision. Junior Anthony Burgio (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) and freshman Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief and graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) pitched an inning of relief to earn his second win of the season.

Dominican was led by Shane Hewlette who went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Robert Liriano faced three batters in the ninth to take the loss.

Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on two hits. Liguori doubled and advanced to third on a groundout. Giblin then singled up the middle, scoring Liguori to make it 1-0.

It remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when Bobby Garbuio doubled and later scored on a passed ball to make it 1-1.

Mercy regained the lead in the fourth inning with a run to take a 2-1 lead. Giblin singled and stole second to lead off the inning. Glennerster singled on a bunt attempt and Giblin scored following a throwing error by the third baseman to give the Mavericks the lead back.

Mercy tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Caballero singled and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by Giblin. Gonzalez later singled to left field, scoring Caballero to give Mercy a 3-1 lead. Gonzalez later scored following an error by the first baseman after Martinez Jr. reached on a single to make it 4-1.

Dominican tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth on two hits and a Mercy error. Liguori led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and advanced to second after an error by the pitcher. A sacrifice bunt by Caballero moved to Liguori to third before Giblin singled to left center to give Mercy the walk-off win.

Mercy had 12 hits and one error and Dominican had 10 hits and four errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 25th when they host Bridgeport at 12 p.m.
