ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2022) – Powered by four different Mavericks recording five or more points, the No. 5 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 17-8 win over Molloy College in their ECC opener on Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field.
The Mavericks (6-1, 1-0 ECC) have won three games in a row, while the Lions (3-7, 1-1 ECC) have dropped two games in a row. The win is the 100th career win for 10th year Head Coach Jordan Levine. Levine is the winningest coach in program history and now has a career record of 100-38.
Senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) had a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists and graduate student Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had a game-high five goals with two assists. Junior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists and senior Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had a goal and a game-high five assists. Sophomore Justin DeMonte (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) and senior Robert LoRicco (Guilford, Conn./University at Albany) each added a goal. Junior PJ Argiros (Levittown, N.Y./Nassau CC) went 11-for-13 on faceoffs with five ground balls and sophomore Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) went 8-for-8 on faceoffs with four ground balls. Senior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made three saves in 31:04 minutes of action to earn the win. Senior Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) made four saves in 20:28 minutes of action without allowing a goal.
Molloy was led by Jack Egan who had a team-high five points on three goals and two assists. Christian Michaels had a game-high 15 saves to take the loss.
The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Brian Ford goal at the 12:08 mark of the first quarter. Kearnan followed with his first goal of the day to tie the game at 1-1. Nick Del Giorno gave Molloy a 2-1 lead with 10:14 left in the opening quarter. Heyder netted back-to-back goals to give the Mavericks their first lead at 3-2 with 4:03 on the clock. Kearnan recorded the final goal of the quarter, off an assist from Heyder, to give Mercy a 4-2 lead after one quarter of play.
Scorcia opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals in the first minute of action to give Mercy a 6-2 lead. Del Giorno scored again for Molloy to make it 6-3 with 10:51 left in the half. Scorcia, Gibbons and Heyder later rattled off three straight goals to put the Mavericks up, 9-3, with 7:40 left in the quarter. Kearnan and Heyder continued the onslaught with two more goals to put Mercy up 11-3 at halftime.
Scorcia added two more goals and Kearnan scored another to open the third quarter, giving Mercy a 14-3 lead with 10:43 left in the quarter. Calabria and LoRicco got in the scoring column to conclude the third quarter, giving Mercy a 16-3 lead after three quarters.
Molloy scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter before DeMonte scored to give the Mavericks a 17-5 lead. The Lions scored the final three goals of the game, but it was not enough as Mercy came away with the win.
Mercy held a 49-25 edge in shots, a 40-19 edge in ground balls and went 24-for-28 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 2nd when they host Mercyhurst at 12 p.m.
