DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2022) – Powered by 14 different Mavericks scoring, the No. 5 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 21-10 win over ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (9-1, 4-0 ECC) have won six games in a row, while the Firebirds (1-6, 0-3 ECC) remain winless in ECC play.
Graduate student Dominic Scorcia had a game-high-tying four goals and senior Brady Kearnan had three goals. Senior Jack Gibbons had two goals and two assists and junior Matt Gaughan had two goals. Junior Robert Guglielmo had a goal and an assist and sophomore Greg Gibbons and junior TJ Heyder each had two assists. Graduate students Marty Shargel, Robert LoRicco and Matt Eccles, senior Zack Higgins, sophomores Damiano Ferrara, Brody Caskenette and Andrew Calabria, freshmen Ryan Smith and Ian Votta all scored a goal. Junior Justin Gerdvil had an assist and two ground balls and junior PJ Argiros had an assist and went 6-for-8 on faceoffs. Senior Tommy Umano made three saves in the first quarter with no goals allowed to earn the win. Senior Joe Tortorella made a season-high 11 saves in 23:36 minutes of action.
UDC was led by Eric Boco who had a game-high-tying four goals. Najee Wilson made seven saves to take the loss.
Kearnan got the scoring started with his first of the day at the 13:04 mark to put Mercy up 1-0. Calabria made it 2-0 just under two minutes later. Scorcia increased the lead to 3-0 at the 10:55 mark after an assist from Guglielmo. Gibbons, Ferrara and Kearnan all found the back of the net in just over a minute to put the Mavericks up 6-0 with 8:04 left in the quarter. Gibbons netted his second goal of the game to make it 7-0 with 7:35 on the clock. Higgins, Kearnan, Scorcia, Gaughan and Eccles scored the final five goals of the quarter to put Mercy up 12-0 after one quarter.
UDC scored their first goal of the game at the 10:04 mark of the second quarter to make it 12-1. Guglielmo answered with a man-up goal to make it 13-1 less than a minute later. The Firebirds scored the final four goals of the quarter to head into halftime down, 13-5.
Scorcia and Caskenette recorded back-to-back goals to open the third quarter giving Mercy a 15-5 lead with 13:23 on the clock. LoRicco, Scorcia and Shargel continued the onslaught with three more goals to put the Mavericks up 18-5 with 8:55 left in the quarter. Votta netted the final Mavericks goal of the quarter to make it 19-5 before Jeffrey Vo scored for UDC to make it 19-6 after three quarters.
The Firebirds scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to make it 19-8. Smith tallied his first collegiate goal to make it 20-8 with four minutes left. UDC netted the next two goals to bring the score to 20-10 before Gaughan scored his final goal of the day to give Mercy the 21-10 win.
Mercy held a 45-44 edge in shots, a 40-32 edge in ground balls and went 18-for-34 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 19th when they play at Adelphi at 7 p.m.
