FROSTBURG, Md. (Apr. 30, 2022) – Powered by a game-high five points from senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College), the No. 4 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 12-6 win over ECC foe RV Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
The Mavericks (12-1, 6-0 ECC) end the regular season with nine straight wins and are ECC Regular Season Champions for the third straight season. Mercy has earned the No. 1 seed in the ECC Championship and will host No. 4 seed Roberts Wesleyan in a Semifinal matchup on Wednesday, May 4th at 3 p.m. The Bobcats (10-7, 4-2 ECC) drop their first-ever meeting to Mercy.
Kearnan had a goal and four assists and now has 201 career points. Graduate student Matt Eccles (Syracuse, N.Y./University at Albany) had two goals and two assists and sophomore Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) had three goals. Senior Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had two goals and an assist and junior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had two goals. Graduate student Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had a goal and an assist and graduate student Sean Makar (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Binghamton University) also had a goal. Sophomore Damiano Ferrara (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) had a team-high two caused turnovers and junior PJ Argiros (Levittown, N.Y./Nassau CC) went 6-for-13 on faceoffs with three ground balls. Senior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made 14 saves to earn the win.
Frostburg State was led by Matthew Ward who had a team-high three goals. Kevin Reuther made 11 saves to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the 7:55 mark of the first quarter when Scorcia found Kearnan, who found the back of the net, to make it 1-0. Heyder later made it 2-0 after an assist from Eccles. After one quarter of play, Mercy held a 2-0 lead.
Ward made it 2-1 with a man-up goal just 18 seconds into the second quarter. Gibbons made it 3-1 with his first of the day with 11:27 on the clock. Scorcia and Makar followed with back-to-back goals to give Mercy a 5-1 lead with four minutes left in the half. The Bobcats scored the final two goals of the quarter to cut Mercy's lead to 5-3 at halftime.
Umano made a key save to open the third quarter to keep Mercy's lead at two and Heyder followed with his second goal of the game to give Mercy a 6-3 lead. Eccles later found the back of the net to put the Mavericks up, 7-3. Austin Sipes and Jake Bowman scored back-to-back goals to make it 7-5 after three quarters.
Gibbons opened the scoring in the fourth quarter to give Mercy an 8-5 lead and Calabria added back-to-back goals, giving the Mavericks a 10-5 lead with 10:28 left. Eccles and Calabria continued the onslaught with two more goals to put Mercy up, 12-5, with 4:41 remaining. A late Frostburg State goal would not be enough and Mercy came away with the win.
Shots were tied at 38-38, Frostburg State held a 33-30 edge in ground balls and Mercy went 9-for-22 on faceoffs.
