DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2022) – Powered by an RBI from senior Ivan Martinez Jr. (Bronx, N.Y./Towson University), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 2-2 tie against Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field. The game was called after 12 innings due to darkness.
The Mavericks (11-15-1) earn their first tie since April 16, 2019 against Bloomfield, while the Panthers (16-5-1) earn their first tie of the season.
Graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 3-for-4 with a run and freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 3-for-5. Martinez Jr. went 1-for-3 with an RBI and freshman Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) went 1-for-4 with a run. Junior Isaiah Ortiz (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) went 1-for-1 and senior Nikko Liguori (Branford, Conn./Franklin Pierce University) went 1-for-6. Junior Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) pitched three shutout innings as the starter and earned a no-decision. Freshman Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) and graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) each pitched two scoreless innings. Graduate student Manuel Sanchez (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and freshman Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) and sophomore Joshua Alvarado (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) both pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) recorded the final two outs of the 12th inning.
Adelphi was led by Anthony Cipri who went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Tommy O'Sullivan made the start on the mound and went 3.2 innings with two runs allowed to take a no-decision. Jacob Pedersen pitched 7.1 scoreless innings of relief with seven strikeouts.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Mercy scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Hoti walked and advanced to third after a Wootten single to left center. Hoti later scored on a wild pitch with Wootten moving to third. Martinez Jr. followed with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Wootten to make it 2-0.
Adelphi answered back with two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. Cipri and Jack Ryan recorded sacrifice flies to tie the game up.
Neither team could break the tie after 12 innings and the contest ended in a tie.
Mercy had 10 hits and no errors and Adelphi had nine hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 8th when they play at Molloy at 3:30 p.m.
