POMONA, N.Y. (May 4, 2022) – Despite a team-high two RBI from graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 9-2 decision to Dominican College on Wednesday night at Clover Stadium.
The Mavericks (20-21-1) see their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Chargers (15-33) earn a split of the season series.
Wootten went 3-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore Jared Hernandez (Moca, P.R./Friends University) went 2-for-4. Senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) went 1-for-3 and freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 1-for-4 with a run. Freshman Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) went three innings with four runs allowed to take the loss. Graduate student Manuel Sanchez (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) tossed three scoreless innings of relief.
Dominican was led by Max Chidsey who went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Oscarli Cruz pitched six innings with no runs allowed to earn the win.
The Chargers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Bobby Garbuio two-run home run. Dominican later made it 4-0 in the second inning on a Chidsey two-run home run.
The score remained 4-0 until the eighth inning when Mercy scored two runs to make it 4-2. Junior Isaiah Ortiz (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) reached on a fielder's choice and Caballero singled to put runners on first and third. After a lineout, Wootten doubled down the right field line, scoring both Ortiz and Caballero to make it 4-2.
The Chargers tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 9-2. Mercy did not score in the top of the ninth, giving Dominican the 9-2 win.
Mercy had seven hits and one error and Dominican had eight hits and two errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Queens at 3:30 p.m.
