DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Aug. 31, 2022) – Powered by a career-high six points on two goals and two assists from freshman Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), the RV Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 7-2 win over Southern Connecticut State University in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-1) have won six straight meetings against the Owls (1-2) and win their first home opener since 2019.
Dixon scored her first two collegiate goals and added her first two collegiate assists. Junior Kayla Camacho (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) scored two goals and graduate students Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) and Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and junior Skyler Schwenkler (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) also scored. Graduate student Sydney Cooper (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos), junior Madison Rosa (Dublin, Calif./Dublin), sophomore Kayla Saavedra (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) and freshman Emma Best (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) all recorded an assist. Freshman Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) played the first 69:58 minutes in goal and made three saves to earn her first collegiate win. Freshman Gina Boggs (Upland, Calif./Upland) played the final 20:02 minutes in goal and made two saves.
Southern Connecticut State was led by Taylor Hennig who had a goal and an assist. Kelsey Burr also scored, and Abigail Allen made two saves in 65:32 minutes of action to take the loss.
Mercy wasted little time in getting the offense started as Bermudez hit the crossbar in the 3rd minute of action. Dixon would score her first goal of the season in the 4th minute after an Owl turnover to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Bermudez quickly made it 2-0 in the eighth minute of action following a cross from Best and Dixon.
Hoyt made it 3-0 in the 16th minute when she took a pass from Dixon and fired a shot from just outside the box into the top right corner of the net. Dixon netted her second goal of the game in the 21st minute, following an assist from Saavedra, to make it 4-0.
Schwenkler gave the Mavericks a 5-0 lead in the 30th minute following a Cooper corner kick. Camacho scored the final goal of the half in the 44th minute to give Mercy a commanding 6-0 lead at halftime.
Burr scored just 12 seconds into the second half to get the Owls on the scoreboard, making it 6-1. Camacho recorded the final Mercy goal in the 52nd minute following a nice cross from Rosa to give the Mavericks a 7-1 lead.
Hennig scored a late goal on a penalty kick to make it 7-2 in the 81st minute, but the Mavericks cruised the rest of the way to a 7-2 win.
Mercy held a 19-8 edge in shots and a 10-8 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
