DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2022) – Powered by goals from junior Daniel Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela/Erskine College) and senior David Breitenbach (Mannheim, Germany/Barton College), the No. 24 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Jefferson University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-1-1) have won three games in a row, all via shutout, and improve to 3-0 at home this season. The Rams (2-4) have dropped four of their last five games.
Rodriguez recorded his team-high-tying second goal of the season and Breitenbach netted his first of the season. Freshman Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen (Bergen, Norway/Tertnes Videregaende Skole) dished out his team-high-tying third assist of the season and senior Vasco Baptista (Alges, Portugal/Escola Secudaria Miraflores) produced his first assist of the season. Sophomore Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made four saves to earn his third straight shutout win.
Jefferson was led by Noah Stover and Mohamed Jawara who both had a team-high-tying two shots on goal. Juan Bahena made four saves in the first half with two goals allowed to take the loss.
Mercy fired the first three shots on goal of the game before Elvestad made his first save in the 19th minute to keep it 0-0. Breitenbach finally got the Mavericks on the scoreboard when he fired a cross from Schilbred-Eriksen into the back of the net, giving Mercy a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.
Just over a minute later, Baptista found Rodriguez who fired the ball into the left corner of the net to give Mercy a 2-0 lead in the 21st minute. Mercy would head into halftime with a 2-0 lead, holding a 9-7 edge in shots.
Jefferson's best chance to score came in the 53rd minute when Diego Guzman's shot hit the crossbar and bounced down and out. The Mavericks backline would hold the Rams to just four shots on goal in the second half to secure the shutout win.
Mercy held a 16-15 edge in shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 17th when they host D'Youville at 12 p.m.
