Cooper and Bermudez Score as No. 21 Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Win Over Queens

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2022) – Powered by goals from graduate students Sydney Cooper (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) and Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech), the No. 21 Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over ECC foe Queens College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (7-1, 3-0 ECC) have won seven games in a row and are off to their best start since 2018. The Knights (1-6, 1-2 ECC) fall below .500 in ECC play and have lost seven straight meetings to Mercy.

Cooper recorded her first goal of the season and Bermudez netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Freshman Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) dished out her team-leading fifth assist of the season and graduate student Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) produced her second assist of the season. Freshman Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made two saves to earn the shutout win.

Queens was led by Marina Pappas who had a shot on goal. Katelyn Villacres made eight saves to take the loss.

Villacres made two early saves to keep the game scoreless. Mercy finally broke through when Cooper found the back of the net in the 37th minute to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Dixon found Cooper who fired the ball from outside the box above the goalkeeper's head to give Mercy the lead. Villacres made two more saves to keep the score 1-0 heading into halftime.

The score remained 1-0 until the 81st minute when Bermudez fired a shot from the top of the box into the lower right corner of the net after a McKail pass to make it 2-0.

Anaya made two saves in the second half to help lead Mercy to the 2-0 win.

Mercy held a 26-3 edge in shots and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 24th when they play at Molloy at 3 p.m.
