ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2022) – Powered by a game-high two goals from graduate student Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and freshman Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and a career-high eight saves from freshman Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly), the No. 21 Mercy College women's soccer team earned a convincing 5-1 win over defending ECC Champion Molloy University on Saturday afternoon at the RVC Sports Complex.
The Mavericks (8-1, 4-0 ECC) have won eight games in a row and start 8-1 for the first time since 2018. Mercy also starts 4-0 in ECC play for the second straight season. The four-goal margin of victory is the Mavericks greatest margin of victory over the Lions (7-2-1, 3-1 ECC) in program history.
Hoyt recorded a career-high two goals and now has a career-high four goals on the year. Dixon had a career-high-tying two goals and now has five goals on the year. Junior Jennifer Silva (Jurupa Valley, Calif./Jurupa Valley) netted her second goal of the season and graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) dished out her third assist of the season. Junior Kayla Camacho (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) recorded her fourth assist of the season and Anaya made a career-high eight saves to earn the win in goal.
Molloy was led by Sienna Nicolich who scored and by Shannon Kilian who had a team-high four saves to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the 33rd minute when Dixon found the back of the net on a shot from the right side inside the six-yard box to make it 1-0. Dixon netted her second goal of the game in the 43rd minute when she fired a shot from 30 yards out that was deflected off a defender to make it 2-0 heading into halftime.
The Mavericks continued the offensive onslaught in the 61st minute when Silva fired home a rebound of her own shot to make it 3-0. Nicolich made it 3-1 after scoring on a corner kick in the 72nd minute.
Hoyt capped off the impressive showing for the Mavericks, scoring a goal in the 78th and 87th minutes to give Mercy a 5-1 lead. Anaya made her eighth and final save in the 88th minute to preserve the impressive road win for the Mavericks.
Mercy held a 13-12 edge in shots and shots on goal were tied at 9-9. Corner kicks were also tied at 2-2.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 1st when they play at Lincoln at 12 p.m.
