Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 2-0 win over Queens on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by graduate students Sydney Cooper and Nikki Bermudez who both scored. Freshman Ancksu Dixon and graduate student Claudia McKail added assists. Bermudez and junior Kayla Camacho were named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday. The Mavericks are looking to start 8-1 for the first time since 2018. Mercy also looks to start 4-0 in ECC play for the second straight season. Mercy has won seven games in a row after opening their season with a loss. The Mavericks are 9-9-2 in their last 20 meetings against Molloy dating back to 2005. Mercy has dropped two of the last three meetings to Molloy with one of those coming in the ECC Championship Game last season. Mercy is ranked No. 21 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. Freshman Kamy Anaya was tabbed ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Camacho, and Dixon were named to the Honor Roll last week. Bermudez was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, Dixon was tabbed Rookie of the Week and Cooper was named to the Honor Roll on September 6th. Bermudez has a team-high six goals and 14 points on the season and Camacho is second on the team with 13 points and five goals. Dixon has 11 points on three goals and a team-high five assists. McKail has two goals and two assists and Hoyt has two goals. Juniors Toni Valadez and Skyler Schwenkler and sophomore Isabella Messina also have a goal on the season. Cooper and junior Madison Rosa also have three assists. Anaya is 7-1 in goal this season with 21 saves, a .840 save percentage and 0.51 goals-against average. The Mavericks are coming off a season in which they went 12-5-4 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. The Mavericks look to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and make the ECC Championship for the ninth straight season. Mercy earned a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship and made the ECC Championship Final for the first time since 2017. The Mavericks ended the season receiving votes nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and began the 2022 season receiving votes. Leading the returners for 2021 ECC Coach of the Year Danny Leon Jr. is Cooper who was named ECC Defensive Player of the Year, D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches All-Region and First Team All-ECC after playing a team-high 1,902 minutes in 2021. Mercy also returns their top scorer from last year McKail who had a team-high six goals and 14 points. First Team All-ECC and All-Region selection Bermudez also returns after recording 13 points on five goals and three assists. Camacho also returns after posting four goals and two assists and Dominique Bono comes back after scoring four goals. Rosa returns after leading the team in assists in 2021 with six and Marlene Avalos returns after having seven points on two goals and three assists. Tyra Anderson, Hoyt and First Team All-ECC selection Schwenkler also return for the Mavericks.
Scouting the Lions
Molloy is coming off a 14-0 win over Lincoln on Wednesday. The Lions were picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 18-3 last season. Molloy won their second straight ECC Championship and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lions were ranked No. 23 nationally to begin the season and are led by ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Lexi Verni and Sarah Tappeto. Molloy is led by senior Sienna Nicolich who has an ECC-best 16 points on six goals and four assists. Freshman Mikaela Barriga is second on the team with 10 points and five goals and Tappeto has an ECC-best nine assists. Junior Shannon Kilian is 7-1-1 in goal with seven shutouts, 32 saves, a 0.33 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in nine starts.
