NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 3, 2022) – Despite a goal from freshman Nicolás Cerda (Santiago, Chile/Andree English School), off an assist from freshman Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen (Bergen, Norway/Tertnes Videregaende Skole), the Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.
The Mavericks (2-1-1) suffer their first loss of the season and fall to the Owls (2-0-1) for the first time since 2017.
Cerda recorded his second goal of the season and has scored goals in back-to-back games. Schilbred-Eriksen dished out his first collegiate assist and freshman Simon Steffensen (Aalborg, Denmark/Aalborghus Gymnasium) made two saves to take the loss.
Southern Connecticut State was led by Yannick Hilpert who had a game-high two goals. Zachary Tuccitto also scored, and Devin Juan made two saves to earn the win.
The Owls opened the scoring in just the 3rd minute of action when Hilpert scored, off an assist from Leroy Best, to make it 1-0. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime with Steffensen making two saves in the half to keep the Mavericks in the game.
Southern Connecticut State increased their lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute when Tuccitto scored following a pass from Arnold Signell.
Mercy inched closer with a goal in the 73rd minute when Cerda found the back of the net, following an assist from Schilbred-Eriksen, to make it 2-1. Schilbred-Eriksen sent a cross to in front of the net and Cerda one-touched it into the right side of the net to get Mercy on the scoreboard. The Mavericks continued to apply pressure to the Owls backline but could not find the equalizer. Southern Connecticut State put the game out of reach in the 87th minute when Hilpert scored his second goal of the day to make it 3-1.
The Mavericks would be held without a shot for the remainder of the game, giving the Owls the 3-1 win.
Southern Connecticut State held an 11-10 edge in shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at 4-4.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 7th when they host American International at 3 p.m.
