Silva Scores Game-Winning Goal in 44th Minute as Women's Soccer Earns 1-0 Victory Over Adelphi

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2022) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 44th minute from junior Jennifer Silva (Jurupa Valley, Calif./Jurupa Valley), off a graduate student Sydney Cooper (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) free kick, the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-1) have won three games in a row, while the Panthers (2-2) have not beaten Mercy since 2017.

Silva recorded her first goal of the season and first goal of her collegiate career. Cooper dished out her team-high-tying third assist of the season. Freshman Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made a career-high five saves to earn her first shutout win of her career.

Adelphi was led by Alexis Hellman who had a team-high two shots. Krista Aliscio made nine saves to take the loss.

Mercy forced Aliscio to make four saves in the first half and a Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) shot was stopped by an Adelphi defender to keep the game scoreless heading into the final minutes of the opening half.

The final minutes were ticking down in the first half and the game looked to be headed to halftime tied at 0-0. However, following an Adelphi foul just outside the box, Cooper sent a ball across the goal to Silva who headed the ball into the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead with just under two minutes left in the half. The Mavericks headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead after holding an 8-1 edge in shots.

Anaya made four big saves in the second half to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 win.

Mercy held a 15-6 edge in shots and an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at 2-2.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 10th when they play at Daemen at 11 a.m.
