Dixon and Messina Score as Women's Soccer Opens ECC Play With 2-0 Win at Daemen

AMHERST, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2022) – Powered by goals from freshman Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and sophomore Isabella Messina (Huntington Beach, Calif./Saddleback College), the Mercy College women's soccer team opened East Coast Conference (ECC) play with a 2-0 win over Daemen University on Saturday afternoon at Karrer Field.

The Mavericks (4-1, 1-0 ECC) have won four games in a row and start 4-1 for the first time since 2019. Mercy also opens ECC play with a win for the ninth straight season. The Mavericks improve to 9-1 all-time against the Wildcats (0-4-1, 0-1 ECC), who remain winless on the year.

Dixon recorded her team-high-tying third goal of the season and Messina netted her first goal as a Maverick. Junior Kayla Camacho (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) had a game-high two assists and freshman Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made two saves to earn the shutout win.

Daemen was led by Nicole Grichen and Alyssa Diaz who both had a shot on goal. Tori DeLappi made eight saves to take the loss.

Mercy dominated the action throughout, recording three shots on goal in the first three minutes of action. The Mavericks forced DeLappi to make five saves in the opening half, but the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

Graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) fired a shot on goal in the 69th minute that was stopped by DeLappi. The game remained scoreless until the 75th minute when Camacho fed Dixon a pass and the freshman fired the ball from the top of the box to the top right corner of the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks continued to apply pressure to the Daemen backline and Messina gave Mercy a 2-0 lead in the 78th minute, off another assist from Camacho. The Mavericks held on for the win with the Mercy backline surrendering just two shots on goal in the game.

Mercy held a 13-2 edge in shots and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. Mercy also held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, September 13th when they host Holy Family at 3 p.m.
