Avalos Scores Game-Winning Goal in 40th Minute as Women's Soccer Earns 1-0 Win Over Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2023) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 40th minute from senior Marlene Avalos (San Diego, Calif./Otay Ranch), off an assist from sophomore Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over ECC foe Molloy University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-3-3, 3-1-2 ECC) have won two games in a row and are 3-0-1 in their last four meetings against the Lions (5-4-4, 2-2-1 ECC).

Avalos netted her first goal of the season and her fourth career goal. Dixon dished out her first assist of the season and sophomore Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made three saves to earn the shutout win.

Molloy was led by Caitlin Kennedy who had a team-high four shots. Shannon Kilian made three saves to take the loss.

Senior Jennifer Silva (Jurupa Valley, Calif./Jurupa Valley) recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 25th minute with Kilian making the save to keep the game scoreless. The game remained scoreless until the 40th minute when Avalos fired home a Dixon cross, giving Mercy a 1-0 lead.

A Kennedy shot hit the post and Anaya followed with a save on an Olivia Ingenito shot to keep Mercy ahead 1-0 at halftime.

Anaya made saves in the 47th and 77th minutes and senior Skyler Schwenkler (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) came up with a team save in the 88th minute to preserve the shutout and the win for Mercy.

Molloy held a 9-8 edge in shots and shots on goal were tied at 4-4. Corner kicks were tied at 1-1.

Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, October 19th when they host Wilmington at 1 p.m.
