Dixon Scores as Women's Soccer Hosts Wilmington

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2023) – Despite a goal from sophomore Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), the Mercy University women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to regionally-ranked Wilmington University on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-4-3) see their two-game winning streak come to an end and fall to 4-1 at home this season. The Wildcats (8-2-3) defeat Mercy for the first time since 2021.

Dixon recorded her third goal of the season and sophomore Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made two saves to take the loss.

Wilmington was led by Alyssa Ruggeri who scored a game-high two goals. Mio Nakajima made four saves to earn the win.

Nakajima made two saves in the first five minutes of the game on two senior Marlene Avalos (San Diego, Calif./Otay Ranch) shots to keep the game scoreless. Anaya made her first save of the game in the 12th minute to keep the score 0-0. Wilmington scored the game's first goal in the 34th minute after Ruggeri fired home a Gabrielle Corchiani corner kick to make it 1-0. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.

Evelyn Payne made it 2-0 in the 50th minute following a cross from Manuela Restrepo. Dixon got the Mavericks to within one, 2-1, in the 62nd minute. Dixon's initial shot was blocked but she fired the rebound past Nakajima to get Mercy back within striking distance.

Ruggeri gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead in the 67th minute with a header goal following a cross from Sharon Freire Omonigho.

The Mavericks were unable to score again, and Wilmington earned the 3-1 road win.

Wilmington held a 9-8 edge in shots and Mercy held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Wilmington held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, October 22nd when they host Lincoln at 1 p.m.
