SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 14, 2023) – Powered by a game-high two goals from senior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and a game-high two defensive saves from seniors Flynn Kirk (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), the Mercy University field hockey team earned a 2-1 win at NE10 foe American International College on Saturday afternoon at Abdow Field.
The Mavericks (5-8, 4-5 NE10) have won two games in a row and defeat the Yellow Jackets (6-7, 3-6 NE10) for the third straight time.
Palladino now has a team-high nine goals and 19 points on the year and senior Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) dished out her fourth assist of the season. Kirk now has four defensive saves on the year and Devlin has a team-high 10 defensive saves. Junior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) made three saves to earn the win.
AIC was led by Dominique Bassallo who scored and by Taylor Wildes who made three saves.
Mercy wasted little time in scoring for the second straight game with Palladino scoring just 36 seconds into the game, off an assist from Ringstad, to give the Mavericks an early 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets evened the score at 1-1 in the 6th minute on a Bassallo goal from Na'Bree Wallace. Kirk made a pair of defensive saves late in the quarter to keep the score tied at 1-1 at the end of the opening quarter.
Palladino and senior Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) forced Wildes to make a pair of saves early in the second quarter. Mercy broke the 1-1 tie in the 25th minute when Palladino found the back of the cage to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. Giordano made a save in the 29th minute to keep Mercy ahead 2-1 at halftime.
Giordano made another save in the 42nd minute to keep the Mavericks in front 2-1 at the end of the third quarter.
Devlin made a defensive save in the 51st and 56th minutes and Giordano stopped a final shot with under 30 seconds left to preserve the 2-1 road win for the Mavericks.
AIC held a 27-13 edge in shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. AIC also held a 14-3 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 18th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3 p.m.
