DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2023) – Powered by four different Mavericks scoring, the RV Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 5-1 win over Dominican University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-2-4) have won two games in a row, while the Chargers (1-12) have dropped five games in a row.
Mercy was led by junior Antonio Sas (San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina/Alliance University) who had a game-high two goals and his first two goals as a Maverick. Graduate student Phillimon Bédard-Khalid (Miami, Fla./Presbyterian College) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) netted his ECC-leading 11th goal of the season. Junior Martin Penafiel (Santiago, Chile/Colegio del Verbo Divino) dished out a game-high two assists and junior Luís Silva (Esposende, Portugal/Knox College) also scored. Junior Juan José Alvarez Acosta (Medellin, Colombia/St. Andrews University) added an assist and junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made two saves to earn the win.
Dominican was led by Guilherme Pirana who scored and by David Arteaga who made a game-high 11 saves.
Elvestad made his lone two saves in the first 10 minutes of action to keep the game scoreless. The game remained scoreless until the 30th minute when Sas scored following a rebound of a Penafiel missed penalty kick that was stopped by Arteaga, making it 1-0.
The Chargers evened the score at 1-1 in the 43rd minute on a Pirana goal from Simon Ostrowski. The score remained 1-1 at halftime.
The score was tied at 1-1 until the 58th minute when Hanken Tjostheim scored, following an assist from Penafiel, to make it 2-1. Silva later made it 3-1 in the 59th minute when he fired a shot from distance into the back of the net.
Sas gave the Mavericks a 4-1 lead in the 74th minute after deflecting a Bédard-Khalid cross into the goal. Bédard-Khalid put the finishing touches on the win with his first goal as a Maverick in the 82nd minute, after a pass from Alvarez Acosta, making it 5-1. Mercy cruised the rest of the way to the 5-1 victory.
Mercy held a 27-7 edge in shots and a 16-3 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 21st when they host UDC at 1:30 p.m.
