Scouting the Mavericks
The Mavericks earned a 6-0 win over Lincoln on Sunday. Mercy is coming off a season in which they went 14-3-2 and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. The Mavericks won their third ECC Tournament Championship and their first outright Regular Season Championship. Mercy looks to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season and make the ECC Championship for the 10th straight season. The Mavericks ended the 2022 season receiving votes nationally in the United Soccer Coaches poll and begin the 2023 season receiving votes. Mercy was picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll and return three of their top five goal scorers from last season. They also return eight student-athletes who started at least 10 matches for the 2022 squad. Senior Kayla Camacho was named the ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after finishing second in the conference with 11 goals and 27 points a year ago en route to All-Conference First Team honors and All-Region accolades. Also returning is reigning ECC Goalkeeper of the Year sophomore Kamy Anaya who went 13-3-2 last season with 45 saves, a .789 save percentage and 0.70 goals-against average. Last year's ECC Rookie of the Year Ancksu Dixon also returns after recording a team-high 33 points on 11 goals and 11 assists. Head Coach Jack Nicholson also returns All-Conference honorees in graduate student Tyra Anderson and seniors Skyler Schwenkler, Jennifer Silva, and Madison Rosa. Mercy has been led by sophomore Maleah Tarin who has been named ECC Rookie of the Week twice and has four goals and nine points. Dixon has been named to the ECC Honor Roll three times and has a team-high five goals and 12 points. She scored the game-winning goal against Southern Connecticut State. Rosa scored the game-winning goal against Dominican on September 6th and has two goals on the year. Junior Amiah Washington has four goals on the year and freshman Angelina Ortiz netted her first collegiate goal in the win over Dominican and has two goals on the year. Junior Elizabeth Bowles recorded her first goal of the season in the Mavericks win over Lincoln. Senior Marlene Avalos has a goal and an assist and Camacho, junior Valeria Rodriguez and Schwenkler all have a team-high two assists on the year. Anderson and Silva both have an assist. Anaya is 6-4-3 in goal with 38 saves, a .731 save percentage and 1.08 goals-against average. She has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on October 16th. Tarin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on October 9th. The Mavericks are 5-1 in their last six meetings against Holy Family with the lone loss coming in 2021. The last three matchups between the two teams have been one-goal games with two games decided in overtime. Mercy has secured their 10th straight ECC Championship berth.
Scouting the Tigers
Holy Family is coming off a 1-0 win over Chestnut Hill on Monday for their third straight win. The Tigers were picked third in the CACC Preseason Poll after going 7-5-8 last season, qualifying for the CACC Tournament. Holy Family is led by Alyssa Hooten who has a team-high seven goals and 15 points and by Allison Loper who is second on the team with four goals and 10 points. Bella Scurci has a team-high three assists and Maura Kilkenny is third on the team with three goals and seven points. Jaina Preuhs is 5-5-3 in goal with 34 saves, a 1.57 goals-against average and .642 save percentage.
