MANCHESTER, N.H. (Oct. 24, 2023) – Despite goals from seniors Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) and Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 6 Saint Anselm College on Tuesday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.
The Mavericks (7-9, 6-6 NE10) see their four-game winning streak come to an end and fall to the Hawks (14-3, 10-2 NE10) for the eighth straight time. Mercy has secured their first-ever NE10 Tournament berth.
Ringstad also had an assist and now has nine goals and six assists on the year. Rosenfeld recorded her sixth goal of the season and junior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) made a game-high nine saves to take the loss.
Saint Anselm was led by Amanda Lewandowski who had a game-high two goals. Mackenzie McConnell made two saves in the first 51:49 minutes of action to earn the win.
Giordano made two early saves in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless before Rosenfeld gave Mercy a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, following an assist from Ringstad. Giordano made her third save of the quarter before Maggie Burchill scored in the 13th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Ava Rayfield made it 2-1 in favor of the Hawks in the 14th minute and Saint Anselm headed into the second quarter with a 2-1 lead.
Lewandowski scored her first goal in the 21st minute to make it 3-1 and Millie Forster found the back of the cage in the 22nd minute to put the Hawks up 4-1. The score remained 4-1 heading into halftime.
Ringstad got the Mavericks back on the scoreboard in the 34th minute, making it 4-2. Saint Anselm held a 4-2 lead after three quarters.
Lewandowski netted the final Hawks goal in the 49th minute to make it 5-2. Saint Anselm led the rest of the way on their way to a 5-2 win.
Saint Anselm held a 22-12 edge in shots and a 14-5 edge in shots on goal. Penalty corners were tied at 7-7.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, October 27th when they host Southern Connecticut State for Senior Day at 3:30 p.m.
