DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2023) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 40th minute from freshman Angelina Ortiz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue), off an assist from sophomore Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Holy Family University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-4-3) have won two games in a row and defeat the Tigers (5-6-3) for the second straight time.
Ortiz netted her third goal of the season and Dixon now has a team-high three assists on the year. Sophomore Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made three saves to earn the shutout win.
Holy Family was led by Maura Kilkenny who had a team-high two shots. Kristen Conway made one save to take the loss.
Anaya made the game's first save in the 6th minute and another in the 34th minute to keep the game scoreless. Ortiz gave the Mavericks the lead right before halftime in the 40th after firing a Dixon cross into the left side of the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Anaya stopped another shot in the 48th minute to keep Mercy ahead 1-0. Conway made a save on a Skyler Schwenkler (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) shot in the 57th minute. The Mavericks backline would not surrender another Holy Family shot on goal, giving Mercy the 1-0 win.
Mercy held an 11-5 edge in shots and Holy Family held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 28th when they host Daemen for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
