DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2023) – Despite a double-double from senior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC), the Mercy University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 19-25) decision to ECC foe Molloy University on Wednesday night at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.
The Mavericks (9-7, 4-5 ECC) have dropped four matches in a row, while the Lions (9-12, 5-3 ECC) have won two matches in a row.
Schneid had a team-high 14 kills and a match-high 10 digs and senior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, Puerto Rico/Monroe College) had a team-high 31 assists with seven digs. Senior Tanializ Rivera (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Concordia College) had 10 digs and junior Aitza Cruz (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico/Polk State College) had five digs. Freshman Janneliz Rodriguez Fuentes (Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) added four kills.
Molloy was led by Kiarra Roth who had a match-high 21 kills.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set one after a freshman Mia Illes-Hair (Lake Worth, Fla./Palm Beach Central) block. Mercy later held a 7-5 lead before the Lions went on an 8-2 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Mavericks battled back and cut the deficit to three, 16-13, after a Schneid kill. Molloy tallied the next four points to take a 20-13 lead before Mercy rallied with a 7-3 run to trim the Lions lead to three, 23-20. Molloy scored two of the next three points to take the set, 25-21.
Molloy took a 6-2 lead in set two before Mercy stormed back on a 7-2 run to take a 9-8 lead after a Rodriguez Fuentes kill. The Mavericks later held a 13-11 lead before the Lions ensued with a 5-1 run to take a 16-14 lead. Mercy cut the deficit to one, 18-17, but Molloy tallied four of the next five points to take a 22-18 lead. The Mavericks continued to battle and cut the Lions lead to two, 24-22, but a Roth kill gave Molloy the set, 25-22.
The Lions built an 11-5 lead in set three and later held a 19-13 lead before Mercy went on a 4-1 run to make it 20-17. Molloy scored the next four points to make it 24-17 before back-to-back kills from Rivera and Anyelainy Vizcaino (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Southwestern CC) made it 24-19. A Roth kill gave Molloy the set, 25-19, and the match in three sets.
Mercy hit .196 with 36 kills, 31 digs, four blocks and two aces. Molloy hit .268 with 43 kills, 32 digs, seven blocks and six aces.
Head Coach Ana Todorovic and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, October 29th when they host Queens at 12 p.m.
