Game Preview: Women's Soccer Hosts Daemen for Senior Day on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 26, 2023) – The Mercy University women's soccer team hosts ECC foe Daemen University for Senior Day and a Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday, October 28th at 12 p.m.

Mercy earned a 2-0 win over Daemen in the ECC Semifinals on November 2, 2022.  

Scouting the Mavericks

The Mavericks earned a 1-0 win over Holy Family on Wednesday for their second straight win. Mercy is coming off a season in which they went 14-3-2 and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. The Mavericks won their third ECC Tournament Championship and their first outright Regular Season Championship. Mercy looks to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season and make the ECC Championship for the 10th straight season. The Mavericks ended the 2022 season receiving votes nationally in the United Soccer Coaches poll and begin the 2023 season receiving votes. Mercy was picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll and return three of their top five goal scorers from last season. They also return eight student-athletes who started at least 10 matches for the 2022 squad. Senior Kayla Camacho was named the ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after finishing second in the conference with 11 goals and 27 points a year ago en route to All-Conference First Team honors and All-Region accolades. Also returning is reigning ECC Goalkeeper of the Year sophomore Kamy Anaya who went 13-3-2 last season with 45 saves, a .789 save percentage and 0.70 goals-against average. Last year's ECC Rookie of the Year Ancksu Dixon also returns after recording a team-high 33 points on 11 goals and 11 assists. Head Coach Jack Nicholson also returns All-Conference honorees in graduate student Tyra Anderson and seniors Skyler Schwenkler, Jennifer Silva, and Madison Rosa. Mercy has been led by sophomore Maleah Tarin who has been named ECC Rookie of the Week twice and has four goals and nine points. Dixon has been named to the ECC Honor Roll three times and has a team-high five goals, three assists and 13 points. She scored the game-winning goal against Southern Connecticut State. Rosa scored the game-winning goal against Dominican on September 6th and has two goals on the year. Junior Amiah Washington has four goals on the year and freshman Angelina Ortiz netted her first collegiate goal in the win over Dominican and has three goals on the year. Ortiz netted the game-winning goal against Holy Family on October 25th. Junior Elizabeth Bowles recorded her first goal of the season in the Mavericks win over Lincoln on October 22nd. Senior Marlene Avalos has a goal and an assist and Camacho, junior Valeria Rodriguez and Schwenkler all have a team-high two assists on the year. Anderson and Silva both have an assist. Anaya is 7-4-3 in goal with 41 saves, a .745 save percentage and 1.00 goals-against average. She has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on October 16th. Tarin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on October 9th. The Mavericks are 10-1 all-time against Daemen and have won the last four meetings. Mercy has secured their 10th straight ECC Championship berth and will host a First Round matchup on Thursday, November 2nd. Seniors Madison Rosa, Jennifer Silva, Kayla Camacho, Marlene Avalos, Skyler Schwenkler and Toni Valadez will be honored in a ceremony prior to the game. 

Scouting the Wildcats

Daemen is coming off a 3-0 win over D'Youville on Tuesday. The Wildcats are 8-0-3 in their last 11 games and were picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 5-10-2 last season. Daemen is led by three-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week Kylie Miranto who has an ECC-best 36 points and 16 goals with a team-high-tying four assists. Two-time ECC Rookie of the Week Magda Carpenter is second on the team with 13 points on five goals and three assists. Brooke Amato and Tatyjana Scalisi both have eight points on two goals and four assists. Four-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week Becca Schultz is 8-3-3 in goal with 91 saves, a .875 save percentage and 0.93 goals-against average.

Mercy resumes action on Thursday, November 2nd when they host an ECC Tournament First Round game.
