Devlin Makes Game-High Two Defensive Saves as Field Hockey Hosts Bentley

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2023) – Despite a game-high two defensive saves from senior Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to NE10 foe Bentley University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-8, 2-5 NE10) have dropped six games in a row, while the Falcons (8-4, 6-1 NE10) have won five games in a row.

Devlin had a game-high two defensive saves and now has a team-high eight defensive saves on the year. Junior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) made five saves with just two goals allowed to take the loss. Seniors Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) and Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) both had a team-high two shots on goal.

Bentley was led by Britney Pearson and Emily Crowell who both scored. Mia Trottie made a game-high seven saves in goal to earn the win.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute of action when Madison Halas sent a cross from right to left and Pearson fired the ball into the back of the cage to give Bentley a 1-0 lead. Devlin made her first defensive save in the 8th minute to keep it 1-0. Devlin made another defensive save in the 13th minute, but Crowell would score on a penalty stroke to give Bentley a 2-0 lead. Trottie closed the quarter with two saves to give Bentley a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Trottie and Giordano both made two saves in the second quarter to keep the score 2-0 at halftime.

Giordano stopped two more shots in the third quarter to keep the Mavericks down 2-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Trottie made a pair of saves in the 53rd minute to keep Mercy off the scoreboard and the Falcons would hold on for the 2-0 win.

Bentley held a 12-10 edge in shots and a 9-8 edge in shots on goal. Bentley held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 10th when they play at New Haven at 7 p.m.
