Barrera Scores Career-High 21 Points as Women's Basketball Earns 51-48 Win at Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (Nov. 15, 2023) – Powered by a game-high and career-high 21 points from sophomore Angelina Barrera (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester Catholic), the Mercy University women's basketball team overcame a 14-point deficit to earn a 51-48 win at Bloomfield College on Wednesday night at Bloomfield College Gym.

The Mavericks (3-0) have won three games in a row to start the season and start 3-0 for the first time since 2014. Mercy defeats the Bears (1-2) for the second straight year.

Barrera went 9-of-13 from the floor and had six rebounds and two steals. Graduate student Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) added eight points, five rebounds and five assists and junior Kayla Halvorsen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) had seven points. Senior Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) netted six points, six rebounds and six assists and junior Jaclyn Stanavich (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) recorded four points and a game-high-tying 11 rebounds. Freshman Amani Abuhatab (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) produced four points and freshman Molly Boek (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) recorded her first collegiate point.

Bloomfield was led by Daniya Darby who had a team-high 11 points.

Mercy held a 4-2 lead at the 8:33 mark of the first quarter after a Stanavich jumper. The Bears responded with a 12-0 run to take a 14-4 lead with 4:38 left in the opening quarter. The Mavericks followed with five straight points to make it 14-9 after a pair of Tedesco free throws with 1:30 on the clock. A Jasmine McDuffie jumper gave Bloomfield a 16-9 lead after the first quarter.

The Bears opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 25-11, with 6:55 remaining in the half. Bloomfield later held a 34-21 lead late in the half before a Barrera jumper cut the Bears lead to 11, 34-23, at halftime.

Bloomfield maintained a 40-29 lead with 3:57 left in the third quarter before the Mavericks closed the quarter on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 40-40 after a Halvorsen jumper.

The Bears regained the lead at 42-40 with 9:16 left in the game before Mercy rallied with seven straight points, capped off by a Wall layup, to take their largest lead of the game, 47-42, with 6:34 remaining. Bloomfield came back on a 6-2 run to cut the Mavericks lead to one, 49-48, with 1:52 left. A Barrera layup with 26 seconds left gave Mercy a 51-48 lead and the Mavericks defense held Bloomfield scoreless for the final 1:52 to earn the 51-48 come-from-behind road win.

Mercy shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the floor, 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from downtown and 50.0 percent (11-of-22) from the foul line. Bloomfield shot 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the field, 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from beyond the arc and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the charity stripe. Bloomfield held a 41-34 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 18th when they play at Adelphi at 12:30 p.m.
