WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2023) – Despite three saves from sophomore Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly), the No. 3 seeded Mercy University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 2 seeded Daemen University in an ECC Women's Soccer Championship Semifinal matchup on Sunday afternoon at Williamsville South High School Stadium.
The Mavericks (9-5-3) fail to reach the Final for the first time since 2019 and fall to the Wildcats (9-4-3) for the first time since 2019. Mercy now awaits a possible NCAA Tournament berth. Daemen advances to the Final for the first time in program history and will face the winner of Molloy/Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday, November 12th at the highest remaining seed.
Anaya made three saves to take the loss. Senior Jennifer Silva (Jurupa Valley, Calif./Jurupa Valley) had a team-high two shots on goal and senior Madison Rosa (Dublin, Calif./Dublin), junior Isabella Messina (Huntington Beach, Calif./Saddleback College), and junior Logan Holley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Saddleback College) each had a shot on goal.
Daemen was led by Madita Zeitz and Magda Carpenter who both scored. Kylie Miranto and Ramone Trentin each had an assist and Becca Schultz made a game-high five saves to earn the shutout win.
Anaya made her first save of the game in the 14th minute and Messina and Silva recorded back-to-back shots on goal, forcing Schultz to make saves in the 16th and 17th minutes of play. The game remained scoreless heading into halftime.
The game remained scoreless until the 49th minute when the Wildcats drew a foul in the box and Zeitz finished the ensuing penalty kick to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Carpenter made it 2-0 in the 58th minute following assists from Miranto and Trentin. Anaya made two more saves on Miranto shots in the 71st and 74th minutes to keep the score 2-0.
Sophomore Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) was taken down in the box in the 82nd minute, but Schultz stopped the ensuing penalty kick by Silva, to keep the score 2-0. The Mavericks could not find the back of the net and Daemen earned the 2-0 win.
Shots were tied at 10-10 and shots on goal were tied at 5-5. Mercy held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
