NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 18, 2023) – Despite three Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy College softball team dropped 9-0 and 8-4 decisions to Bentley University on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (0-4) have dropped four straight games to open the season, while the Falcons (3-1) have won three straight games.
Game 1: Bentley 9, Mercy 0 (5 Innings)
Junior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) led off the game with a single, but was left stranded at third to end the inning. The Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead.
Senior Hailey Puglia (Holtsville, N.Y./Assumption University) doubled and junior Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) singled in the third inning but Mercy was unable to score. Bentley tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third on three hits to take a 7-0 lead after three innings.
The Falcons added two more runs in the fourth inning to make it 9-0 and Mercy went down in order in the fifth to give Bentley the win via the run-rule.
Puglia and Sisco both went 1-for-2 and Harris went 1-for-1. Senior Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) pitched three innings to take the loss.
Bentley was led by Kylee Amato who went 3-for-3. Dahlia Fink pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had three hits and no errors and Bentley had nine hits and no errors.
Game 2: Bentley 8, Mercy 4
Bentley scored a run in the top of the first and two more runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. The Falcons later made it 5-0 after recording two more runs on four hits in the third inning.
Mercy plated a run in the bottom of the third when freshman Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) singled and later scored on a Sisco RBI single to make it 5-1. Bentley answered with a run in the top of the fourth to make it 6-1.
The Mavericks inched closer in the fifth inning when they scored three runs to make it 6-4. Sisco and senior Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley) started the rally with singles and Sisco later scored on a Sydney Johnston (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) fielder's choice to make it 6-2. Junior Alexandra Karavias (Westbury, N.Y./WT Clarke) doubled home two more runs to get the Mavericks within two.
Bentley responded in the top of the sixth with two runs to take an 8-4 lead. Mercy was unable to score in the final two innings, giving the Falcons the sweep.
Sisco went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Karavias went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Smart went 2-for-3 and Puglia went 2-for-4. Stark went 2-for-3 and senior Alexi Benson (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) pitched a complete game to take the loss.
Bentley was led by Jordan Krause who went 3-for-5. Taylor O'Brien earned the win in the circle for the Falcons.
Mercy had 10 hits and two errors and Bentley had 15 hits and no errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face Saint Anselm for a doubleheader in North Myrtle Beach starting at 10 a.m.
