Ramirez and Sanders Record Team-High Three RBI as Baseball Earns Split With RV Le Moyne and Goldey-Beacom

CARY, N.C. (Feb. 19, 2023) – Powered by a team-high three RBI on the day from senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) and junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 16-5 win over RV Le Moyne College before falling 10-0 to Goldey-Beacom College on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks (1-3) pick up their first win of the season and split the weekend series with the Dolphins (1-3). The Lightning (5-0) remain unbeaten with the game two win.

Game 1: Mercy 16, RV Le Moyne 5

After a scoreless first inning, Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Sanders reached on an error by the third baseman and scored following a Ramirez double to right field. Le Moyne answered with a run in the bottom of the second to make it 1-1.

The Mavericks took the lead back with two runs in the top of the third to make it 3-1. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) started the rally with a single and back-to-back walks from seniors Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) loaded the bases. Sanders later singled home both Glennerster and Gonzalez to make it 3-1.

Mercy broke the game open in the top of the fourth with eight runs to take an 11-1 lead. Glennerster brought home the first two runs of the inning on a two-run single and Giblin followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 6-1. Glennerster later scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1 and graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) singled home Giblin to make it 8-1. Ramirez brought home two more runs on a double to left center to give Mercy a 10-1 lead and sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) tripled home Ramirez to make it 11-1.

Le Moyne scored a run in their half of the fourth inning to make it 11-2. The Dolphins two more runs in the fifth inning to make it 11-4.

Mercy scored four more runs in the sixth inning to take a 15-4 lead. Schoen led off the inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-4. Sanders scored on a passed ball to make it 13-4 and Caballero doubled home Ramirez to give Mercy a 14-4 advantage. Gonzalez plated Caballero for the final run of the inning following a double to make it 15-4.

The Mavericks scored their final run in the seventh inning when Schoen reached on an error and scored following a Sanders double to make it 16-4. Le Moyne scored a run in the eighth inning, but it was not enough as Mercy earned the game one win.

Caballero went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs and Sanders went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI and pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Ramirez went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI and Schoen went 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Glennerster went 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and Gonzalez went 2-for-6 with two runs and an RBI. Giblin went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) went 4.2 innings with four runs allowed to earn the win. Junior Gaetano Pennisi (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Le Moyne was led by Brady Fureno who went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Jordan Goldmann pitched 3.1 innings to take the loss.

Mercy had 15 hits and one error and Le Moyne had eight hits and three errors.

Game 2: Goldey-Beacom 10, Mercy 0

After two scoreless innings, the Lightning scored three runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead. Goldey-Beacom added a run in the fifth and seventh innings to take an 8-0 lead and tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning to build a 10-0 advantage.

Gonzalez led off the ninth inning with a single, but was left stranded at third and the Lightning earned the win.

Gonzalez and Giblin both went 1-for-4 and junior Ryan Rozinski (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) pitched four innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Goldey-Beacom was led by Braden Kolmansberger who went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Justin Jump allowed one hit in eight innings to earn the win.

Mercy had two hits and three errors and Goldey-Beacom had 13 hits and one error.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, February 21st when they play at UNC Pembroke at 3 p.m.
