MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 26, 2023) – Despite a team-high two hits from senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 15-0 decision to Le Moyne College on Sunday morning.
The Mavericks (2-8) have lost five games in a row and fall to the Dolphins (4-4) two of the three meetings this season.
Giblin went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 1-for-3. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) and senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) both went 1-for-3. Sophomore Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) pitched 1.2 innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Le Moyne was led by Wyatt Patchett who went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. Jordan Goldmann pitched seven shutout innings to earn the win.
The Dolphins scored three runs in the bottom of the first on two hits and three Mercy errors to take a 3-0 lead.
Le Moyne tacked on five more runs in the second inning to build an 8-0 lead. Patchett hit his first home run in the third inning to give the Dolphins a 9-0 lead.
Ramirez gave the Mavericks their first hit in the fifth inning, but a double play ended the threat and inning.
The Dolphins scored fifth more runs in the sixth inning to take a 14-0 lead. Patchett capped off the scoring in the inning with a two-run home run.
Giblin singled to lead off the seventh but was left stranded at third after a groundout ended the inning.
Le Moyne scored their final run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 15-0.
Mercy could not score in the eighth or ninth innings giving Le Moyne the victory.
Mercy had five hits and three errors and Le Moyne had 13 hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 4th when they play at Southern Connecticut State for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
