DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 1, 2023) – Powered by a game-high four goals from graduate student Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), the No. 11/12 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 13-11 win over No. 16 Assumption University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-1) defeat the Greyhounds (1-1) for the second straight time and hand Assumption their first loss of the season.
Grzelaczyk added four draw controls and sophomore Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) recorded three goals and one assist. Graduate student Emma Rippon (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Iona University) netted two goals and graduate student Jaclyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./New York Tech) had a goal and a game-high-tying three assists. Senior Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) had a goal, an assist and four ground balls and freshman Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) added a goal and sophomore Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had an assist, five ground balls, five caused turnovers and four draw controls. Graduate student Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had four caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made the start in goal and made four saves in the first half. Freshman Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) made five saves in the second half to earn her first collegiate win.
Assumption was led by Jenna Joseph who had a team-high six points on three goals and three assists. Skylar Troyan made eight saves to take the loss.
Hansen opened the scoring for Mercy at the 14:16 mark of the first quarter to give Mercy an early 1-0 lead. Joseph scored two straight goals for the Greyhounds to give the visitors a 2-1 lead with 13 minutes on the clock. Jaclyn Grzelaczyk found the back of the net with 10:07 on the clock to make it 2-2 before Isabelle Edwards gave Assumption the lead back at 3-2. Callow made it 3-3 at the 7:37 mark before Joseph netted her final goal of the day to put the guests up, 4-3, with 5:35 left in the quarter. Moussa evened the score again at 4-4 with her first goal of the day and Grace Chicko made it 5-4 in favor of Assumption with 3:08 on the clock. A late Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk goal from Moussa tied the score at 5-5 after the first quarter.
Erin Shimborske scored the first goal of the second quarter at the 13:49 mark to give Mercy a 6-5 lead. Back-to-back Assumption goals gave the Greyhounds a 7-6 lead with 8:59 left in the half. Rippon scored the final Mercy goal of the half at the 7:46 mark, off an assist from Lindsey Shimborske, to make it 7-7. Molly Weiand recorded the final goal of the half with 2:50 on the clock to give Assumption an 8-7 lead at halftime.
Mercy's defense would hold the Greyhounds scoreless in the third quarter and Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk scored the only two goals of the quarter to give the Mavericks a 9-8 lead after three quarters. LaMonica came up with three key saves in the quarter to keep the visitors scoreless.
Two straight goals from Moussa and another from Rippon to open the fourth quarter gave the Mavericks a 12-8 lead with 9:03 left. Edwards ended the run with a goal to make it 12-9 at the 7:22 mark. Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk netted her final goal of the game with 5:24 remaining to give Mercy a 13-9 lead. Assumption scored two goals in the final two minutes of play, but the deficit proved too much to overcome and Mercy earned the win.
Mercy held a 27-26 edge in shots and a 13-12 edge in draw controls. Assumption held a 17-15 edge in ground balls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 4th when they host No. 6/10 Adelphi at 3 p.m.
