Erin Shimborske Scores Game-High-Tying Two Goals as No. 11/12 Women's Lacrosse Hosts No. 6/10 Adelphi

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 4, 2023) – Despite a game-high-tying two goals from senior Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University), the No. 11/12 Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped a 9-5 decision to No. 6/10 Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-2) fall to 0-4 all-time against the Panthers (1-2), who pick up their first win of the season. The four-goal margin of defeat is the smallest margin of defeat in the four all-time meetings against the nine-time National Champions. 

Erin Shimborske had two goals and a game-high three caused turnovers to go along with two ground balls. Graduate student Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), sophomore Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and sophomore Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) also scored. Graduate students Jaclyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./New York Tech) and Emma Rippon (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Iona University) each added an assist and sophomore Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had three ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Junior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made seven saves to take the loss.

Adelphi was led by Danielle Marino who had a game-high-tying two goals. Madison Marchetta made a game-high 13 saves to earn the win.

Back-to-back goals from Hansen and Moussa gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead with 10:39 left in the first quarter. The Panthers scored the final four goals of the quarter to take a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.

Erin Shimborske scored the lone goal of the second quarter with 5:55 on the clock to make it 4-3 after an assist from Rippon. The Mavericks headed into halftime down, 4-3.

Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk tied the game at 4-4 with 11:45 left in the third quarter after an assist from her sister Jaclyn. Giovanna Zapparrata quickly answered for the Panthers to give Adelphi a 5-4 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the period. The Panthers scored the final three goals of the quarter to head into the fourth quarter with an 8-4 lead.

The Panthers took a 9-4 lead at the 11:42 mark of the fourth quarter following a Kelly-Ann McGrath goal. Erin Shimborske netted her second goal of the day with 6:12 remaining to make it 9-5. However, the Mavericks were unable to score again and Adelphi earned the 9-5 win.

Adelphi held a 23-22 edge in shots, a 12-6 edge in draw controls and a 15-9 edge in ground balls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, March 8th when they host Bloomsburg at 3 p.m.
